Title pretty much says it. My favorite time periods are (what’s now) United States, Contact era to WW1, but not bound to it. I just want something good to listen to that brings an era to life (like Hilary Mantel does for Tudor England).
Hands down get the unabridged version of “Pillars of the Earth”, by Kenn Follett. Terrific performance !!

If the US-ness isn’t a hard requirement, you can’t do much better than Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey-Maturin novels read by Patrick Tull. The man is (ahem, was) an artist.
If fiction isn’t a hard requirement, you might like Founding Brothers by Joseph Ellis or Titan by Ron Chernow. Both are sufficiently breezy that you can listen to them without concentrating.
I like Patrick O’Brien, but he sends me to Wikipedia and google more than any other author. (Okay, what kind of knot was that? And the Duke of what?)
