Recycled Dentures

Believe it or not, I want to find a source or contact that can help me find a pair of used dentures.

I and my husband are disabled, and living on less than 1400.00 per month. I am still able to work, and am highly skilled in accounting. However I am 58 yrs old, and my upper denture broke. I haven’t the money to replace it, and in my employment skills field, being older and toothless, leaves me in the soup line.

My husband has been on soc. sec. dis. for 5 years now, he is in end stages of heart disease. My disability is Bi-polar and PTS, I deliver news papers 2-3 times a week in the middle of the night up in the mountains of Oregon to suppliment our income.

I am serious. Any genuine suggestions or offers would be appreciated.

The Master speaks.

Oops. Not the Master. A minion.

Some dental schools accept patients for low rate or free treatment, you could Google for the schools near you. They might repair your old denture, or make you a new one, or perhaps both.

I agree. I had dental work done on the WAY cheap at a dental school. Also, look on line for dental clinics in your area. In Chicago, I found a ton of them for my son.

OHSU has a dental school with an associated clinic.

It’s in Portland, and very very good about working with patients who have financial difficulty.

Best of luck to you.

This is no Joke people. Many of us live on less than $700 USD a year. And yes there might be government -insurance- to help some. but many of us fall through the cracks. Worse yet, if you have had the bones that used to support teeth mangled by oral surgeons who do not care if they rip you apart. After all they know we cannot afford to sue them, Then you cant even be fitted for dentures.
I am personally interested in either finding an organization that does or is willing to collect up dentures for recycling, or in helping in a drive to do this. Surely recycled dentures can help not only the poor in the USA but other places as well. My mom tells me she has had her dentures for over 40 years. So you know they do not wear out.
That guy who joked about nailing them together as artwork or using them as paperweights was very insensitive to the legitimate needs of people less fortunate than himself.

$700.00 a YEAR? Do you mean a month?

Are you seriously saying you’re offended by a flippant remark made by a newspaper columnist? It’s a joke, get over it.

I don’t think it was insensitive, given that he made the joke AFTER explaining that dentists (the experts) say that it’s not possible to recycle dentures because of the individual fit to one person’s mouth; and even the theoretical taking-apart-individual-teeth-and-reusing them isn’t done.

At that point, the question is answered, and instead of just closing the column, the writer tries to make a joke, because jokes, snark and sarcasm are part of the special style (and appeal) of the Straight Dope. (I personally found the joke a bit lame).

Yeah, it sucks a bit that dentures can’t be re-used for something useful, but that’s the nature of the thing.
