Red Pistachios; The TM get there first

One might note that the question answered by Jill at Why are pistachioes colored red? was already answered by the Teeming Millions at Why are pistachios red?. That thread has a good link to the California Pistachio Commission’s web site, where lots of helpful information is found, NOT including the cute myth.

Sorry DS but I liked Jill’s answer better:p

I was completely fascinated by the myth, thinking “no way, really?!”

I have to admit I was completely let down at the end. but a good myth is always a treat.

A myth is as good as a mile.

Yes, DS, it happens often, that someone sends a question to Cecil, and Cecil passes it over to Staff for the Mailbag… and either the same poser or another post the question to the Message Boards.

The trick is that the answers are the same, eh?

Or, sometimes, it gets posted to the message boards, then kicked upstairs.

Where do you find red pistachios? I’ve only seen the traditional boring green inside, beige outside ones in the stores.

I do have to note that I did like Jill’s myth, though I was having trouble with it simply because the main source of pistachios in the Old World was Iran, where the faiths practiced included such lovely entries as Zoroastrianism, as well as Islam, but not much Hinduism (that I know of). Of course, maybe it was Indian merchanters who did the dyeing, although I am given to understand in other threads that it would have been originally a Chinese idea… oh, wait, wrong subject.

Can Jill create a Zoroastrian myth for us?

The EDitor wrote the title for this mailbag column. No “E” in “pistachios,” dear. Think “armadillos.”
