I’ve only recently started to preview my posts before I hit submit (A hundred or so butchered posts does that to a person) and I’ve noticed that for it to work, it has to contact the SDMB message board. It acts as if you’re submitting a post, not simply checking that it’s right or the codes are correct.
Taking into account that no post is ever perfect, for me, and a post can have numerous ‘previews’ before ever being submitted, multiplied by the others around here who do the same thing as me, and you’re talking some major server usage for previews alone.
Isn’t there a way to let a poster preview their post without it having to contact the SDMB? That simple(?) measure alone would seem to lighten the load up considerably.
Don’t give up quite that easily, though. We can’t change the software architecture, but there are people who can. You can go to the vBulletin website, and suggest it on the message board there. Who knows, it may happen in the next release.
It’s funny, I was just thinking the other day that preview could, in principle, be handled via java rather than serverside… If done correctly, you could even leave the server-side method in place, but set it up so it’s only used for folks who have java disabled… Hey, I can dream, can’t I?
I was thinking down the lines of the java applet route too.
I’ve poked around the Vb site a little before. I’ll meander over there and submit it sometime soon and update this post if they comment.
While were on the subject of bandwidth, I also notice that when the board goes wonky, the main pages of the SD work fine. That is, the board can freeze up but the archives, advisory board, and other parts of site will continue to work unaffected.
That, to me, says that the MB is being handled by a seperate server. Correct?
