I’m talking about the fact that if the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Pistons win their respective championships, a city with only one major sports team in each major sporting league will have 2 champions.
Has any other city that does not have multiple teams won two championships in the same year?
I know it is unlikely…but as a huge fan of both teams I have to let the idea entertain my mind.
Oh, and let’s go ahead and make predictions for both the NBA and NHL.
I’ll say the Detroit Pistons win the NBA champsionship, but that Ottawa wins the Stanley Cup. Sorry, Red Wings, I betray thee.
Let’s just all pretend I did not spell Red Wings as one word in the title.
:smack:
There have been MANY years in which two teams in the same city won their assorted sports’ championships.
By limiting discussion to cities that have only one team in a league, you eliminate New York and a few other cities from discussion (because they had multiple teams in the same sport), but this has happened numerous times anyway.
Just off the top of my head:
In 1979, the Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl and the Pittsburgh Pirates won the World Series.
Yes…that’s sort of the point of the thread. Good one about Pittsburgh.
Two years ago; Boston Red Sox and Patriots. NY has had two several times (but you’ve excluded towns with multiple teams in your OP). When the Sox won there was a thread here that covered the entire list, but I can’t seem to find it now.
It wouldn’t even be the first time it happened in Detroit, and it wouldn’t even come close to the best sports year the city ever had: As of the end of 1936 Stanley Cup play, the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup; the Tigers were world champions in baseball; and the Lions were NFL champs.
Montrael teams have won the Grey Cup (for CFL football) and Stanley Cup (for NHL hockey) in 1944 and 1977.
I think Sportscenter noted the other day that this is the first time that two teams from the same city finished with the best overall record in their league. I might have heard that wrong, though.
Perhaps he is referring to these two sports specificaly, since they end around the same time.
The question is moot since the Red Wings aren’t going to win the Cup.
