Yep, it isn’t a huge deal to have these things wiped from collections. You say “they are billing me for a service I cancelled and didn’t get, I’m not paying it.” You send a letter that states that to the credit bureaus and its gone.

Did you pay for the whole month of May but you’re wanting a refund for the unused portion of May? I suppose it would be nice of them to refund the unused portion, but generally I would not expect a refund; if you pay for a month of service then you get a month of service.

They said their policy is charge for a whole month at a time, so I could not cancel until the end of the month.

Actually,I think that is typical for trash pickup. They do not pro-rate their service, it is billed by the month. If I call and ask what it costs for dumpster service it is quoted as $X per month. If I begin or end service mid-month it is billed as a full month.

Except it’s not clear s/he won’t get the service - s/he clearly doesn’t want the service and probably doesn’t need the service, but the OP says

which sounds like the only reason “service” isn’t provided is that there’s no trash to pick up when they drive by .Not that they wouldn’t pick up any trash if it was put out

It’s very common for services of all sorts to only allow cancellation to take effect at the end of a billing period - if my (garage lease, gym membership ) runs from the first of the month to the last day of the month , I can’t cancel effective May 15- I’ll have to pay for the month of May. The fact that I don’t use the garage or gym after the 15 doesn’t mean I couldn’t have if I wanted to.
