Regarding M$'s Anti-Worm Update

Ever since I installed M$'s anti-Scobie worm (or whatever it’s called) I have had trouble staying connected to the internet. I ditch the install, and no problems. So how much danger am I in by not having that patch installed?

Anything I can do to correct this problem if I reinstall the patch?

Do you have a firewall? Mine is in my router and I don’t worry about it.

Interesting… I’ve been having problems with my broadband connection that started around the time I accepted that patch…

Erk! also not working since the update: My installation of PostCast server (an SMTP server program) on a work machine.

Reinstall of PostCast fixed it though.

Hmm interesting. The Sobig worm infects PCs through email, so as long as you’re careful with your email, (don’t open attachments from people you don’t know, and in particular, don’t open .pif attachments) there is no risk to you and you don’t need the patch.

Isn’t the patch just for XP & 2000? So if you don’t have those you don’t need it.

Yes, and occassionally, Winblows lets it run. Most of the time, however, Winblows kills it as soon as it starts.

Oh, and handy I’m running XP Pro, so, in theory, I do need it.

Mangetout, apparently it’s a common problem with this patch. I noticed a comment on another board where someone mentioned having the same problems I was, and they uninstalled the update, and it fixed the problem. So I did that and have been lucky so far. Methinks, M$'s solution was simply to make it hard for folks to sign on to the net so they couldn’t spread the virus, rather than fixing the security hole it would exploit.

Why that’s absolutely brilliant.

I didn’t put the patch on though cause I don’t need it cause Im real careful what I open & I use Agent for reading mail. I love it, it keeps three years of email I sent–how is that for archiving?
