In reference to this article, Do Mosquitoes Prefer Certain Blood Types, I was sad to see that blood type ABs were not addressed. Is there no research on this, or do I sense some mosquito-like blood-type discrimination going on here? […Just kidding.]
I’ve always hear that certain people get bitten and others don’t, but I wonder if it is more likely that certain people get a stronger reaction to the bites than others.
Mosquitos don’t hurt when they’re biting, so you might not even realize one is on you until after you have a slight allergic reaction and the bite site starts to swell and itch. If you don’t have a strong allergic reaction to mosquito bites, it is very likely that you get bitten just as often as the next person, but you never notice.
I have a cousin who gets bitten as often as anyone else, but spends enough time outdoors that he’s built up a tolerance. If he sees one biting him, he’ll sometimes do the thing where he pinches his skin to trap it, and still doesn’t get a welt.
But serous-ly folks, :o, everyone in my immediate little family is O neg. and the mosquitos just love us. My poor son (now 18, and most likely immune to west nile virus like the rest of us) looked like he had chicken pox (again) after we relocated to Texas when he was 7. They just ate him alive.
My daughter has been bitten quite a few times this year here in Portland (worst yr I’ve ever seen here for the little buggers) and I’ve gotten popped a few times myself. (but I am VERY sensitive to the fell of any critter landing on my skin with an intent to bite/suck, so I have killed most before they could get their wick in)
Not sure what it means, if we are any more or less likely to be targeted due to blood type, but for whatever it’s worth…they seem to love us.
