Regarding the story about "Truth or Consequences" told on the SNL retrospective

Did he also say “in the butt Bob?”

Except for the “live variety show” bit. Has a live variety show ever been broadcast?

Actually, the lady said, “In the ass, Bob,” as I saw watching the clip when they finally showed it to Bob Eubanks, who for years swore up, down and sideways that it never happened. He looked like he’d been hit in the face with a wet frying pan.

That said, “In the butt, Bob” does roll off the ton–

Never mind.:o

Oh tons of the early ones, like Texaco Star Theater, Your Show of Shows, etc. But even a live show required lots of rehearsals and a practice runthrough. So this lady played a regular tune in the rehearsal and saved the racist rant for the show? No way.

Maybe for the big ones, but I can well believe that there was some small local station that had their own show, that didn’t bother with that.
