This dude has had this coming for years… about fucking time. The objection seems to be from many, 'Well, it’s only libertarians, right wingers, and the religious so whatever, fuck 'em, they got it coming." Some of you are real fucking morons.
Wow, I would like to know what in those posts that Der Trihs has made over the last 3 years warrants a suspension. He was just expressing an opinion, a cynical and stupid opinion maybe, but just an opinion. I did not see him insulting any other poster and I don’t believe he was even trolling. His rants are always clearly targeted and have evidence, they only require you look at the world through his twisted, angry, red-colored glasses.
I think this suspension is stupid; their are many more odious posters, though few with views as extreme, here at the dope.
Yeah, it’s a wonder they won’t just admit that all of them are driven solely by a nefarious desire to enslave and torture all women and a satanic bloodlust to exterminate every man, woman and child on Earth who isn’t a white Christian Republican. Because it’s clearly that simple.
Well, when you put it that way…it sounds pretty accurate.
Except I don’t think Der Trihs believes in Satan.
Which of the posts linked to do you think warrants the suspension. His screed is pretty extreme, but it’s not like he is calling any board member fucking morons or anything. He thinks conservatives hate women, minorities, and poor people and he states that point clearly, so what? Many conservatives here think liberals are unfailingly moronic and also want to control every bodies life in the smallest degree and the say so over and over and over again. Should we suspend them too because liberals find their opinions equally offensive? Hell, let’s suspend Clothahump; as far as I can tell he just posts little screeds like Der Trihs and presents even less evidence.
Red Shirt IMO has the same problem some previous long term problematic posters have.
He often dances right up to the line of “don’t be a jerk”
So, technically speaking he rarely breaks the rules. But he does it so often he manages to have a major and negative impact on discussions that a 100 other random Joe’s (that near the line due to a bad day or momentary slip) added together would not have.
And like other posters that are good at dancing the line, if he gets banned it will technically be for rules violations that aren’t the ones he’s famous for dancing up to.
Like Al Capon and tax evasion.
Well, here’s what got him the warning in that last post:
“Of course not; he’s [Bricker] a right winger, and will therefore support anything that hurts ordinary people and oppose anything that helps them.”
If you don’t see that as an insult to Bricker, then I don’t know what to say.
No one gets suspended for a particular past. It’s the accumulated oeuvre that counts.
Another one to say that this suspension seems odd; the linked incidents seem to have a few Mod notes attached to them if one reads down far enough, but I didn’t see any outright warnings listed although he’s received at least one in the past year or so. I could maybe see a suspension if he was outright defying attempts at moderation, but I didn’t really see any of that in the linked bits.
From a personal standpoint, I find tiresome DT’s incessant and ridiculously simplistic editorializing about the supposed evil motives of people he doesn’t like (and that’s quite a bunch, it seems), and don’t see that it adds any value to the content here. On the other hand, after one has seen a few of his posts one has seen them all, and knows exactly what one is going to get. For me his input has just become background noise and I’ve never felt like my whole Straight Dope experience was being ruined because of it.
ETA: OK, the statement linked by John Mace is more than a bit over the top.
From the very first Link:
He also got a recent warning for threadshitting.
ETA: ugh, never mind, that was September 2013.
I can read dates, I promise. Really. … …
The first link showed only a single post. I had to pull up the whole thread to see the warning. But I stand corrected.
Suspension is an opportunity to reflect, learn and hopefully develop proper etiquette, manners and all that other horseshit necessary to fully understand the multitude of rules, rule application and rule interpretation per forum, necessary to comprehend the “don’t be a jerk” rule.
So, he was suspended for his “body of work”.
Your shit list has more than a hundred?
That bit I italicized was precisely the reason given that Der T. never got suspended for hundreds of other posts that either broke the rules or slid riiiiiiiiiiight up to the line.
Because (and I quote):
and another cite:
Those are just two of many times where it was explicitly stated that DT gets special treatment just because most posters just roll their eyes and move along rather than objecting or arguing with his idiotic opinions.
The problem with that, of course, is that gives Der T. a free pass that nobody else got.
So,
A) That’s a GD mod’s longstanding rule (he’s repeated it several times) about why Der Trihs gets a pass on insults: because people ignored them.
B) This suspension really goes to show that the new blood on the board really is trying to make positive changes. The days of ‘newbies get warned for insults because they’re disruptive, but Der T. gets a get-out-of-jail-free card, because people ignore him’ rule seems to be over, and good riddance to it.
All hail our feared new mod overlords.
This is a steaming pile of horseshit. But I suppose it must be fun seeing only what you choose to see.
Re-read the thread, Champ, this time for comprehension.
I agree with this, very much.
Things like this, on the other hand -
worry me. That otherwise apparently intelligent Dopers can consider that “the other side is motivated entirely by sadism” as adding a lot to the boards is - bothersome. Are you really as malignantly insane as he is, and just hiding it better?
Hyperbole is one thing. When you actually mean it, is another.
I hope he is better when he returns. I expect he will simply stop posting and not return at all. In either case, the boards will be better and the level of rhetoric marginally less squirrel-foody.
Regards,
Shodan
They took his testicles. Isn’t that taxation enough?
Sometimes the issue is not that you agree with what the poster has to say, but that you support their right to post.
