Reggie White dead at 43

ESPN doesn’t have it up yet on their website (it’s breaking news on TV right now), but details as I’ve gleaned from NFL Live are that he died this morning of a heart attack. He was 43.

I don’t follow football but he was born and raised in Chattanooga, the city whose shadow I grew up, in so I mourn for him if for no other reason.

My condolences to his fans.

I just called my sister not 3 minutes ago. She immediately broke down when I told her. I think Favre is the only player more loved in Packer Nation.

43 and dead of a heart attack. None of us are safe. Fuck, this is going to be a bad day.

the story.. Shit, he was only 4 years older than I.

I was fortunate enough to be living outside of Green Bay when Reggie played there. He was truly beloved by the GB faithful, and for good reason. He was a good and honest man, played hard, and stayed active in his community. He represented the good in pro sports and athletes.

Farewell, Minister.

Shocked. Just…shocked. Having lived in Milwaukee for two years, I had no choice but to be assimilated into a Pack fan. Preferring defense to offense, Reggie quickly became my favorite player.

This is truly sad news for football and Packers fans everywhere.

Thanks for the great memories, Reggie.

I’m stunned. I didn’t really follow his career (I was pretty young when he still played), but good grief…43? Rest in peace.

Dang it, that’s the homepage that changes daily,
this one will be a little more permanent.

If a Mod wanders through here, could you disable the first link? It won’t be relevant in a day or two. Thanks.

Not a football fan, but I recognized his name in the headline. Sounds like he was a good guy.

Waaaaaay too young to go :frowning: Looks like he was ready, though.

I just found out about it. According to ESPN, he may have died from complications stemming from sleep apnea. I had no idea apnea was such a big deal.

[Nostalgia]
I remember watching the Packers play the Patriots in Superbowl XXXI. There was one drive in particular that sticks out in my mind.

The Patriots had the ball, and Reggie sacks Bledsoe on the first down. Second down, NE hands off to Curtis Martin (I think), and Reggie tackles him. No gain. Third down, Reggie sacks Bledsoe again. If I remember right, that three & out saved the game for the Packers.

Here’s to you, Reggie. tink

Bummer. I always liked that guy.

Apnea is a dangerous condition for any “big” man. Puts a huge strain on your heart. If you’re already worried because of family history, steroid use (at any time of life -NOT saying RW used while in NFL !!! ), or extra weight, you might want to have a sleep study done. My ins paid most of mine (10 yrs ago) and I can’t beleive how much difference it made in my everyday life.

What did they do for you? Surely a study didn’t make a difference in your everyday life.

My dad is a “big” guy (6’3" 240ish lbs) with sleep apnea and he’s 6 years older than Mr. White was. I’d hate to get a call one morning saying “something happened.”

Wow, how horrible for his family.

I can’t sleep for NoClueBoy, but a couple of my family members were fitted with CPAP machines. Another decided to have surgery to fix the problem.

Um, sleep should be speak. I’m not capable of sleeping for someone else either. I even previewed too.

They put me on a forced air machine for a while and had me go on a diet/exercise regimen to lose some of that around the middle weight. Also had me change my sleeping position. Put it all together and I got healthier. Some future day, I may have to go on the forced air machine again.

Everyone is different. What worked for me may not be waht gets reccommended for anybody else. That’s why the sleep study is so very important. Only then can your doctor have a good idea of what your particular neds are.

If you are a biggish guy (doesn’t always mean just fat, guys), or already have a tendency towards snoring, or have a family history of heart trouble, or are getting a beer gut, or even just wake up tired more days than not…, ask your doctor if a sleep study might be in order.

Sleep apnea can be a huge deal. The fact that I had it and high blood pressure were the two main reasons for my decision to have gastric bypass surgery. Many nights my SO would have to shake me so I would start breathing again.

My heart goes out to his family.

The study is just the first part. After the study, they will usually do a 2nd one and fit you with a CPAP machine. Mine was a life-saver; and my gastric bypass surgery has alleviated the issue.

Reggie was not a good man. He was a racist and a homophobe.

How can people say he was good man?

I’m sure some will feel his athletic abilities will counteract his hatred and bigotry.

I am not one of those people.

I have posted a few threads about an old racist bastard I used to work for. Everyone talked about his good deeds: giving money to charity (preferably Southern Baptist ones and even better if only for white people) and helping people start businesses (again, the whiter the better). If they only they knew what a hate-filled person he was, they’d change their minds.

On second thought, they probably wouldn’t.

I guess by now he has found out whether or not he was right!
