Can we state conclusively whether or not it is possible to be be reinfected with this piece-of-shit virus?
Monkeys that have recovered don’t get it again when reinfected
However we know animal testing doesn’t always replicate humans.
In the Spanish Flu epidemic, those infected in the first wave did not get it in the second more deadlier wave.
There have been isolated reports of people getting reinfected, but they are not sure if it is an actual reinfection or the original infection didn’t go away completely
The MERS outbreak showed people did not get reinfected, however after a year or so, the virus mutated enough so they could get it again, though it was milder
This virus still is in it’s early states only about four months, so reliable stats are not known, you only have educated guesses from similar viruses
I don’t think it’s a yes/no question, either. I think with any viral infection, there’s always % of people who don’t develop immunity for whatever reason. This is one of the reasons universal vaccination is important–herd immunity means that the % of people who could still get measles never finds out. So a few people getting re-infected doesn’t mean there is no acquired immunity for anyone. The fact that it’s just been a few seems to imply the opposite.
Anything is possible but it is highly unlikely that you can get reinfected once you have recovered from this. One of the strategies to fight this pandemic is to immunize healthy people through limited exposure.
