religions gone the way of dinsosaurs and vice-versa

I am writing a combination stargate sg-1, star trek, legend of zelda fanfic. yes i know i need to get a life.

if you have not seen stargate much or at all, stargate’s story line is greatly influenced by past cultures and religions. in stargate for example it turned out the egyption religion was caused by technolicaly advanced parasitic alians (the g’uild) ruling th egyptions as slaves. many other religions were based on similer stuff. another example is the viking god thur turned out to be another alian (this time a good one). of course religions still paracticed never seem to have any alian connections on the show. i bet this mostly to save the writers some grief.

finding some facts to use would help my story along.

so what extinct religions mention something that could interpreted as dinosaurs? extra points if the dinosaur like things are on/in a seperate world, realm, ect.

Well, serpents and dragons are a part of a number of ancient myths. In Babylonian myth, you have Tiamat, the goddess of the sea and chaos, who appears as a great serpent who is defeated to make the world.

In Judaism, you have a similar figure in Leviathan, the great sea serpent, and also in the serpent that tempts Adam and Eve in Eden.

Among the Norse, you had the Midgard Serpent, the son of Loki, the god of fire and chaos, who wanted to eat the world, and Nidhoggr, the corpse eater, who tries to destroy the roots of the World Tree, and thereby destroy all the worlds.

In Chinese legends, dragons represent primal forces of nature, and are the kings of the animals.

The ancient Egyptians feared the god Apophis, the great serpent, who sought to kill Ra and eat the sun, plunging the world into darkness.

The Greeks worshiped Typhon, a many headed dragon who tried to overthrow the gods.

Not really a religous example AFAIK, but there’s a theory that mythological griffins were inspired by fossils of Protoceratops.

By the way, it’s “goa’uld.”

If you’re going to be writing sci-fi, you really should learn how to spell alien.

Don’t forget Quetzalcoatl, the Aztec serpent. Do a google search for more than you ever needed to know.

It’s spelled Thor.
