Religious Poll

To be fair though, when you’re wasted you don’t tend to notice the goings on of others around you…
And RNATB: Yeah, I know there’s a bunch of Indian Dopers on here, that’s why I’m hoping a Muslim shows up before one of you guys end up clicking the Hindu Spot.
And as for practicing/non-practicing, well I meant my earlier post pretty much 100%- I consider myself several things, but if you ask me to put myself down in a classification- I’ll put down Hindu.

I see plenty of pile ons when someone criticises faith too. And I see no reason to assume that just because someone criticises someone else talking about their religion to assume they are atheist or agnostic; believers have never agreed with each other except at swordpoint.

And conservatives tend to get piled on because they are wrong, or just plain nasty.

“Ignostic? What’s that?”

“I am uncertain as to the existence of Iggy.”

An ignorant gnostic?

Heretic! Iggy is God!

Count me in as another atheist Jew. A couple of years ago, I felt more strongly Jewish than atheist and would have clicked the Jewish button, but these days it’s reversed.

Who appointed you Iggy Pope?

“Ignostic” was coined by Sherwin Wine, a humanist rabbi. I haven’t been able to find *his *definition, but others have defined it as declining to answer “Does God exist?” because the question itself is meaningless.

Or at least wanting to answer the question with a question: “What do you mean by God when you ask whether God exists?” And not being able or willing to make an informed decision on the first question until the second is answered. (cf. Theological noncognitivism)

I only came across the term Ignostic recently, and haven’t really looked into it very deeply. (Obligatory wiki link). But despite my saying the word sounds a bit goofy to me, I see its position and (IMO) compatibility with weak/implicit atheism and/or agnosticism is a good description of my beliefs on religion, empiricism and verifiability.

Yes, this confusion (or possible confusion) was all I was getting at. Given a poll with a choice between Atheist and Agnostic I think there’s a good chance of getting cross-over. I’ve tended to prefer Agnostic over “weak” Atheist, but then I know people who think Agnostic = apathetic / I haven’t thought about it; which isn’t my own position, and my preference is just that, there seems little nailed down in this area.

I actually spent a good twenty seconds looking for the Catholic option, I’m so used to places breaking it out from “Christian”.

I’ve gotta say, this poll feature is REALLY cool- I find it fascinating to see the numbers and percentages so far.

Only 4 more votes before 300 results come in! And I might get to be a 1:300! I REALLY thought there were more Hindus for sure, but I guess all of you guys are non-practicing?

There’s the poster indian, but I haven’t seen him about recently, and not really sure that he’s Hindu though he lives in in India itself.

God Damn Independent.

Atheist from the ashes of a long discarded catholicism.

Of the choices available, Christian still describes me more closely but I do not affiliate myself with a church

While it’s heartening to see so few Christians, I wish they weren’t so vocal that they seem like more. I guess having an agenda makes them pushy.

As a non-believer and the creator of this thread, I’d like to apologize for the above comment directed at Christians and humbly request that others refrain from disparaging people of different beliefs in this thread. There’s plenty of room for that in the pit.

I do think some of the comments people have made about their own faith or lack thereof are fascinating, but there’s no need to insult others.

Thank you, TWDuke.

I picked “other.” I believe in God, but don’t believe in the Bible. I also believe in a form of reincarnation, but not the same as other religions. I would agree with someone upthread who said “spiritual, but not religious.”

I think I’m the only active Baha’i on the boards. So I checked “other”.

Damn, I don’t even remember mentioning that on the boards. You have some memory. By birth, I’m half-Parsee and half-Hindu. By choice, I’m atheist.

And I’m definitely not a former member
