Religious Poll

That’s an aaaargh!nostic.

Ah, thanks!

My father’s side were mostly Jehovah’s Witnesses; he himself eschewed religion.

My mother’s side were mostly Shingon Buddhists; she herself believes in God but to no specific Protestant religion.

Now JW’s don’t believe in a lot of the Christian garbage such as Hell as well as Halloween, Easter and Christmas so they didn’t mingle with a lot of other Christians. However as far as we know,my father’s father never did openly practice his own own Sotoshu(Soto Zen) religion.

Shingon Buddhists tend to accept religious teachings from other religions also, so my Grandmother used to follow people like Billy Graham literally religiously. However, because my mother’s father was Catholic (Scots Catholic).Likewise, as far as we know, he never openly practiced his religion. But he wouldn’t allow his wife to practice her pagan religion either but would let her watch Billy G. She resumed after he died.

Thus neither parent were religiously enthused. We kids all went to bible school(Olivet Baptist) during the summer, but that’s about all. However, after my father died, my mother went shopping around for a Church to go to, an unaffiliated Protestant Church and she still maintains an east facing Buddhist altar for her mother and father-in-law.

So this thread has become 17 varieties of atheist explaining their non-belief to each other. Have I got that right?

I’m militantly agnostic when it comes to god issues, but lately have out of guilt lapsed into a culturally Jewish thing (which mostly consists of wishing I was on the same continent as a good bagel and feeling guilty for not doing more Jewish stuff). If there are higher powers out there I suspect that they’re pretty disinterested in us but I can’t rule out some sort of vengeful Cthulhu type situation, so I try to keep an open mind and assortment of weapons at hand.
