UB40 has done some great covers-Here I Am Baby, and I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You, and “The Way You Do The Things You Do”-the first two are better than the originals, IMHO.
I also love the Chilli Peppers’ “Love Rollercoaster”
And on the Beatles Anthology, you can hear John doing “That’ll be the Day”, which sounds as good as Buddy Holly.
Then of course, Blue Suede Shoes was NOt an original Elvis song-it was Carl Perkins.
Also did anyone watch that Burt Bacharach tribute a while back?
Sheryl Crow (who already did a pretty decent job on Dyer Maker), did a great remake of One Less Bell To Answer
Psycho Killer, Ring of Fire and White Room by The Bobs. Memory by Big Daddy. The Jonny Quest theme by the Reverend Horton Heat. Jockey Full of Bourbon by Moxy Früvous.
And I can’t believe I’m the first to mention Istanbul (Not Constantinople) by TMBG.
Two really good covers:
Hendrix - All Along The Watch Tower
Molly Hatchet - Dreams (I’ll never see)
Jake:
Nah, no reason to list 'em all. I only mentioned “Cold Rain and Snow” because it may be the cover tune that they performed MOST frequently. (And I happen to love it…the Obray Ramsey original, too!)
Oh, yeah…and “Morning Dew,” as well.
Even funnier is the commercial on TV with this song & a bunch of women athletes running around (I think WNBA but I’m not sure)
Also: Pepperlandgirl, I have to disagree a little. I thought U2 did an excellent version of Helter Skelter
How bout the Gap Kids commercials featuring “Girl, You Really Got me now…” (forgot the title). The girls are even worse than the boys; they obviously don’t know how to play the instruments, they can’t lip-sync, they don’t have rythm…
Or ANY of the Gap commercials, for that matter.
