Pete Frates, the former Boston College baseball star whose battle with ALS inspired the viral Ice Bucket Challenge and raised millions for ALS research, died Monday at age 34.

We have been donating annually to ALS foundation ever since my FIL died from it 53 years ago. Awful disease. Tony Judt who died from it in 2010 wrote (dictated actually) that aside from dying, one of the worst things was to have an itch that he could not scratch, especially in the middle of the night when his caregivers were asleep.
