Dopers older than 25 should know what I mean. Back in the '80s and early '90s, they were small black-and-white advertisements in comic books offering to pay you amounts in the hundreds of thousands for old coins. The coins they were asking for weren’t particularly rare ($250 for a 1965 quarter), so what was the catch? I seem to remember having some of the coins they were looking for, but I never did send them in. Did I miss my chance at millions?

I suspect it was a case of “We will (under certain circumstances) pay up to <$ludicrous sum> for your 1965 quarter”, a very different claim than “We will pay <$ludicrous sum> for any 1965 quarter”.
Is your particular 1965 quarter one of the ones with the double-strike? Generalized examples
Oh, it’s just a plain-vanilla ordinary run-of-the-mill Washington quarter from 1965? Give ya 25¢ for it.
Yes, but a 1964 quarter is worth more than face value nowadays (a quick check shows it sells for $2 in very fine condition).
It was/is sucker bait.
Not that they won’t pay for old coins but they are mainly interested in SELLing you
old coins as an investment.
They are still in business today and advertise in a variety of magazines.
