When I see a statement about the veterans marching past I think of a short story, a fantasy, by Robert Heinlein.titled The Man Who Traveled in Elephants. Johnny, a retired and widowed salesman, has traveled to a special and spectacular fair. It aims to have invited any local parades and celebrations to come show off their stuff. The Mummers from Philadelphia, Mardi Gras celebrants, you name it.
And of course there are marching veterans. As the story tells, some had to ride because “Merciful Heaven forgive us, they could not walk”
