Removable Mortar, Putty, Caulk

I build my wife a quick little greenhouse tucked in a corner of our house. I made it out of galvanized steel studs and vinyl and fiberglass corregated panels. This is not a permanant structure, but one that will be around for a little bit. My problem, today, is how to seal the edge where the wall meets the brickface of the house. The bricks have a rough surface(Holiday Hill Stone by TXI ~1960), and normally one would use something like mastic or mortar to fill in the gaps. I would like to use something that will not bond permanently to the brickface. For the records, there are two eight foot lengths of 4" nominal thick bricks that need sealing. Both of these intersections are under 2’ eaves so it’s fairly unlikely that they will be exposed to much water.

I got something called rope caulk made by Frost King from Home Depot. It feels like putty and isn’t supposed to harden. I tend to believe this because it comes in a very non-airtight cardboard box and when I opened it the stuff was nearly just as soft & plyable as silly putty. It comes in broad flat roll kinda like licorice and you peel off however many sections you need depending on the gap that needs to be filled.

I hope this stuff peels off cleanly in the spring, because I have 103 year old window sills and they can’t take much abuse.

I can’t seem to find it in Home Depot’s online store but here is what appears to be the same thing:

If that link doesn’t work, go to http://www.aubuchonhardware.com and search for “rope caulk”.

Thanks, Attrayant, I have to run over to Homo Depot today to pick up some replacement sprinkler heads anyway.

103 year olh windows! Wow that must be a neat place you have.

Aaaarg! Home Depot. Home Depot.

It does. I’ve used it for the last couple of years, and it comes off as easily as it goes on. Doesn’t even leave a residue, stain or anything–good stuff.
