Over in this thread, I asked about a documentary on a cable channel I don’t get. The more I hear, the more I wish I got this channel.
Instead I get plenty of stuff I don’t watch that much. Or at all.
So, here’s my scenario. The best cable channel ever becomes available to you. But to get it, one station you currently get has to be removed to make room. What station get’s the boot.
For me it would have to be The Golf Channel. Complete waste of a TV slot.
ESPN. MTV. Several shopping channels. Several ESPN channels, for that matter. Several religious channels. I program many of these out of my TV, so that I don’t even have to surf through them.
I am a poor college student so I just have 12 channels - no cable, no satellite. However, for some unknown reason, I have two ABC’s, two NBC’s, and two CBS’s. So there’s three I don’t need right there.
I would lose no sleep if ESPN (all of them) disappeared forever from my TV. The religious channels can go. And although I loved MTV in its infancy, it has since become the epicenter of how-low-can-some-people-go. VH1 is soon to follow them.
I program tons of channels out of my TV and VCR: All the sports channels, all the all-news channels, all the foreign-language channels, the Cartoon Network, the local cable-access channels, CNBC, both C-SPANS, the educational channels…
If I could get better reception (and NBC) with my antenna, I could probably give up cable entirely.
I could do without at least 95% of the crap I get. If I had Discovery, TLC, the Big Three networks, UPN, Fox and Comedy Central, I think that’d about cover it for me. That’s 8 channels. And I have well over 200 channels. Makes me wish I could pay for cable on a per-channel basis.
Do I have to have hubby’s permission? If not, then ANY of the many, many iterations of ESPN that we have could get the boot. Golf channel, ditto. And anything that plays soccer. Can’t even begin to say how sick of watching soccer and golf I am! I mean, I’m a pretty cool wife (I think)…I’ll watch football and hockey with him and actually enjoy it. Isn’t that enough?! Do I also have to be subjected to hours and hours of alternating between “Bundesliga” and “Golf Challenge” too?
Sigh.
If I have to have hubby’s permission on what channel goes, then clearly it would be one of the shopping channels. Not that I watch them anyway, so I wouldn’t mind…but I’d sure like to get rid of at least ONE of all them durn sports channels.
Cable? Buncha spoiled sissies. “I have toooo maaaaany channels… these suuuuck…” Wah wah wah. The six channels I get work just fine for me, and I wouldn’t sacrifice any of them for a cable channel, because I’d probably have to pay for it, and then it’d come with a whole bunch of extra channels I don’t want, and then I’d be all, “I have toooo maaaaany channels… these suuuuck…”
ESPN and its variants
Any dedicated sports channels, for that matter
C-SPAN and C-SPAN2
All the country/western DMX music channels
Same goes for any “dance music” DMX channels
As for the must-keeps:
Comedy Central
Game Show Network
Discovery Channel and its variants
Cartoon Network
Nickelodeon (I’m a kid at heart, what can I say?)
The Weather Channel (good for having the TV on in the background)
All the rock DMX music channels
There are several others that I like but wouldn’t necessarily miss if they were taken off.
It’s not clear to me, though, if I can ask the cable company to stop sending me (and billing me for) a particular non-premium channel that I don’t want if it’s not bundled with a pay channel.
