Removing super-stubborn stains from glassware

I have lived in the Los Angeles area for over 60 years. We have some nice glassware, but in the last several months some unsightly film has settled on the glasses and it has resisted every effort of mine to remove it–dishwashing liquid, cleanser, S.O.S, even a lime cleaner we keep under the kitchen sink. Granted Los Angeles is notorious for hard water but this is excessive. Are there any cleaners that can remove such stubborn film from drinking glasses?

If CLR doesn’t budge it, try some gentle scrubbing with 0000 (super fine) steel wool.

There’s a possibility that your dishwasher detergent is the culprit. I’ve heard of hazing or etching with long term use of “lemon” scented dishwasher detergent.

Try putting them in the sink or a bucket filled with water, then add about 1 cup of bleach. Do this before going to bed, and leave them sit in the solution overnight. Next day wash them to remove all the bleach. I have found that soaking stained bowls, pitchers, plates and even fry pans in a bleach solution takes care of all my stain problems. Good luck.

I regularly use one of the cheap laundry cleaners containing Sodium Percarbonate. You can buy expensive name brands but they work no better. I sprinkle a tiny amount in cups, bowls, cookware and glasses and leave them overnight. We soak our cups at work over the weekend. Glassware comes up cleaner than it does out of my dishwasher. Only a rinse is required after soaking.

I use the powder for lots of cleaning. I throw some in the toilet bowls whenever I go away for a few days.

Thanks to all; I’ll try.

If all else fails, look for the mildly abrasive cleaner that’s used on flat glass ranges. This cleans all manner of burned/dried food and boiled-off water deposits, so if there’s minerals deposited on your glassware, this will surely take it off. This is the stuff I use; you can probably find it at hardware or appliance stores.

Is one of the cleansers you’ve tried Bar Keepers Friend? Generally the best cleanser for glass items that is easily available.

I disagree on the bleach. I also live in LA and we had all kinds of problems with crusty buildup in the dishwasher until I stopped using the detergent with bleach and started using white vinegar in the compartment for the spot-treatment liquid. I’d soak in vinegar and see if that helps. Or what the heck, try one in vinegar AND one in bleach and see what works best. Don’t mix the vinegar and the bleach though!
