There are ways to get a bullet to move without using a gun. I’ll spare the mods the difficulty of deciding whether it’s legal to post those methods here, but will say that all it takes is some thinking about how to impact the primer.
Why hasn’t it happened in the last few years with functionally identical guns available? Why is it certain to happen now because the ban has lapsed?
I own a Romanian made AK-74 type rifle, modified to lack certain military features. As of right now, I’m allowed to add a folding stock, a bayonet lug, and a flash suppressor. Am I somehow more likely to go on a killing spree this week than last? If I were to go on a killing spree, would those extra features really make me more lethal?
And… do you feel better if someone shoots up his office mates with a regular old remmington 870 hunting shotgun? In close quarters, that weapon would be more lethal and effective and yet it’s very innocent looking, owned by millions, and almost no one is calling for the ban.
Regarding the “criminal” issue - what seems to have happened was that someone implied that almost all gun crime is commited by criminals and therefore since they won’t mind breaking the law anyway there’s no use to burden law abiding citizens. Then someone else said that a lot of spur of the moment shootings are commited by otherwise law abiding citzens. To which someone replied that they’re a criminal as soon as they commit the crime.
There was the miscommunication. It’s unfair to say “Well, as soon as someone does something bad with a gun, they’re a criminal, so therefore only criminals do bad things with guns” - it’s technically true, but what we’re really trying to compare are otherwise law abiding citizens acting on an impulse against “career criminals”.
That makes sense to me…and I agree that it is not asking too much for a gun to be secured by the safest means possible. I did not know about the destructive triggerlock you describe and could not understand how someone could screw up by leaving their guns locked in their case at home (knowing that cases and homes can be broken into.) Thanks for the explanation.

You know, I forgot to mention earlier another “goof” in the plot . . .
. . . I distinctly remember a scene where Spock shouts out a “Goddamn you sir, you will try . . .”–a distinctly emotional reaction. Isn’t this Vulcan supposed to be emotionless? Yeah, he’s half human and all, but I thought he was supposed to be pretty straight and narrow on the emotion stuff.
I wish I had a copy of the show–solely to research that scene. Anyone else remember this part?

If Spock were a '49er: “Live long, and prospect”.
WHOA! :smack:
Totally wrong thread!! It should have been in this one!! The weirdest part is that I haven’t had a single beer since Saturday night. Holy crap!
I guess that’s what you get for having two threads open at once. Ouch, this one’s gonna hurt in the morning!!

Ignore that idiot behind the keyboard/mouse.
I think I should clarify what I meant about the trigger lock-
Most trigger lock that I have seen have a very small locking mechanism, which would force one to use a small drill bit to drill it open. Small drill bits have a tendency to shear off in lock openings, and I was making a leap of logic by saying that you’r probably have to ruin the trigger guard to remove the lock. I’m not saying that’s the way it would have to be done, but I know how those little locks can just snap a bit off inside the keyslot, and then it’s REALLY difficult to drill out.

And on a lot of them, they’ll specifically tell you never ever to use one on a loaded firearm, in part because if it doesn’t pull the trigger back, a hard enough yank on the trigger lock will.
more misinformation or would it be disinformation

My favorite part of the article is this interesting line, listing some of the features banned by the AWB:
It makes you invisible? COOL!
That’s about as good as an article I saw in the early 1990’s (actually, about 1993) which claimed laser sights on handguns and rifles should be banned as they were designed “primarily to blind police officers and helicopter pilots”.
And I’ve been using this stupid Stealth Boy all these years.
I’ve wasted my life.
Couldn’t possibly have been designed to paint a noticable mark on the target that is used for lining up the sights or the scope in order to get more accuracy. Hell no, it’s all about blinding helicopter pilots.
Where do these idiots come from?
Cool. This article says the special features make guns ‘more semiautomatic’. I want that.
I would also like my light bulbs to be more on.
Show of hands…how many here have ever attached a machete to the barrel of your rifle?
“…the bayonet lug, an attachment for a machete…”
Thought so…
[Bolding mine]
That is possibly the most ridiculous single statement I’ve ever read or heard.
A hallmark of a paranoid democracy, probably. I have news for you, though- most of the people in democratic states understand that their governments are not lulling them into a false sense of security. They further realize that even if their government does decide to infringe on their rights, an automatic rifle and a coffee can full of ammunition is hardly going to change their minds.
Read into that as far as you want pal, but I consider the fact that a population armed with nearly the same weapons as it’s standing army a peaceful coexistence a hallmark if not a tribute to a democratic civilization.
And as far as the states ‘lulling’ them into anything, I’m sorry to say this, but I’ll put pennies to the dollar that most people don’t really pay all that much attention to what their government (whether it local, state, or federal) is doing most of the time. We’re just too damn complacent. . .
If it gets to the point where Mom and Pop have to go to their hidden coffee can of ammo for protection, then apparently no government protection exists, be it local police, state troopers, or even National Guard . . .

Go ahead and call me “paranoid”. Just think about my point for a bit. . .
Is that like making something “More Less”?
And Ironically, a lot of those laser sights are apparently rather useless if not mounted properly.
The author could not be bothered to look up what is a bayonet, and instead asked the guy two cubicles over?
And what the heck is “more semiautomatic”? Have to pull the trigger twice to get off each shot?
Where has RTA been, I wonder…
