Renew the Assault Weapons ban. I dare ya!

Right.
If he doesn’t have a handgun, he goes and chops 'em up with a machete, stabs them with a knife (multiple deaths in a school in Japan from a guy with a knife,) or he steals a fucking FLAMETHROWER (lunatic here in Germany in the 1960’s) fer christ’s sake and toasts a bunch of kids in school.

People kill by being in state of mind such as to want to kill - the weapon is just the means to the end.

If I were to reach that point, I’d take the most readily available weapon of mass destruction and mow people down by the dozens - I’d take my car and crash through downtown, sidewalks all the way.

Are you scared of cars now? They are easily available, easily stolen, and can kill loads of people in a very short time.

I am not scared of weapons. Some of the people who own and or carry them scare the beejesus shit out of me. Even so, I consider a weapons ban a waste of time and effort because a killer will kill - with a gun, a knife, a sword, a hatchet, a rock, an ice pick, or his bare hands.

Gun control advocates are basically proclaiming their own fear of their fellow man and stating to the world at large that they consider all of their fellows to be so unstable and untrustworthy that they do not feel safe if any of them have a weapon - and then they forget that anything can be used as a weapon, some things to even more horrifying result than the worst of the oh so evil guns that they want banned.

Remember September 11 in this light. Consider the effects of a lunatic who steals a tank truck full of gasoline and crashes it into a building downtown. Consider what could happen if someone were to dump a load of anhydrous ammonia in the middle of town.

Guns are small potatos compared to what an inventive lunatic could come up with.

If you want to be scared of your fellow man, go right ahead. Just be thankful for the ones who reach for a pistol or an AK-47 instead of doing something drastic.

Sorry. I got kind of riled up. Feel free to tell me to go soak my head.

Cars kill more people than guns do.So as a matter of fact I am. I’m in the process of starting movement to ban the import of cars. Especially the fast-n-furious ones. You know the ones, those ones that the kiddies like to race. Who needs such a car anyhoo? Such dangerous weapons of mass destruction that do kill countless people are not a hallmark of a civilized society.

Yes yes I know I know cars don’t kill people bad drivers do

snerk

And (in the US, at least) more ***murders ** * are committed with edged weapons than with guns!
Of course, we can, jheh heh, call all those automobile killings “accidents” - heh heh…

And they are JUST SO ACCURATE this way, too! (As long as you don’t loosen up the vise you have them clamped in.)

Do you have a cite for this? According to this Bureau of Justice Statistics web page, in 2002 51% of homicides were committed with handguns, 16% with other guns, and only 13% with knives.

Travelling on business.

One more thing about my uncle, for those who seem to think that maybe he kept all his guns laid out on his bed or on the front porch or some such. They were in an average locked gun case in a back closet. (The sort of case that was made up like an attractive piece of furniture, basically wood with a clear front so you can peer inside and admire the hardware.) Plus your average Brink’s type alarm system for the house. Hardly what I’d call irresponsible or stupid, just average.

Now of course he has sunk over $1500 on a fridge-sized gun safe, the sort that you need a blowtorch and a whole weekend to leave a mark on. And expanded the alarm system to detect every mouse fart in the house. And iron bars on the back windows … Maybe $2500 to protect one Glock and one shotgun.

I see in a case like this an example of gun ownership not being something that makes a person feel safe, rather it is a cause of increased worry and paranoia (i.e., now that I have bought these unnecessary things, surely someone will come to steal them, so now I must spend more money and inconveniece myself in order to protect them.)

Murder shmerder people are dying. Banning all cars will (starting with imports) cut down the death rate drastically. Also consider greenhouse effect, won’t someone think of the ozone layer? I just wanna feel safe walking down the street, is that too much to ask?

It was in another thread. I’ll try to find it.

(per capita): 0.04 per 1000 people [24th of 62]

Murders with firearms: 8,259 (1999) [4th of 32]

I stand corrected; I must have misremembered something. I was wrong.
My apologies for posting from memory.

sorry to bump this old thread up, but i did not wan to start a new one. check out this grossly misinformed article:

No, the bullets themselves are 2 inches long. The bullet itself is 3/4". Not to mention, they even misspelled “Colt”.

What the hell is a “night sight”?

This is why I can’t stand the media. They thrive on twisting the facts to raise a raucous, and make money on it when they do. These are the people that are feeding the paranoia to some of the more anti-gun folk, which in turn, makes them lobby for knee-jerk legislation.

Oh, how I despise the media.

Shit, I meant to say the cartridge itself it 2" long.

Damned forgetting-to-preview-itis! :smack:

The first mass murder by an AK-47 will get people demanding a reinstatement of the ban.

Just a simple question, or a few.

Why do people in suburbia need any type of semi automatic weapons or handguns…or pump action shot guns or lever action rifles for that matter?

Why does such a (perceived) large percentage of the population feel that they need to own such powerfull firearms?

Wouldn’t a complete ban on all firearms that are semi automatic or self loading be a god send to the community? Except for law enforcement and the armed forces, of course.

  1. I wasn’t aware that firearms commited mass murders on their own. I always had the impression they had an operator.

  2. The weapons on the streets now are no different than the ones on the street before except that they have additional cosmetic or minimally functional features like a bayonet lug.

  3. The weapons on the streets are not functionally different from many normal looking hunting and plinking guns that don’t offend anyone because they don’t look scary.

  4. Would people feel better about a mass murder commited by a common shotgun?

Black powder rifles are a bit hard to load efficiently if a burglar is in your house.

No. YMMV.

I wasn’t aware that the Second Amendment required a citizen to prove need before they are allowed to purchase a certain type of firearm. Could you show me where that text is?

I believe you have confused the terms ‘want’ and ‘need’. I do not need to own the semi-automatic copy of the AK-47 I currently have, but I certainly did want it.

If you look at the Miller Supreme Court decision, you’ll see that the court interprets the Second to mean that the people have the right to own firearms that have military value, as the framers’ intent was that the populace have the opportunity to be armed as well as any individual soldier. As for law enforcement, why shouldn’t they be subject to the exact same regulations in place for any other civilian, since they are after all civilians and not members of the military?

Why don’t you just try the old fashion teqnique of snotting them with a bat or a golf club or your fist before going for the option of putting a bullet hole in them? Or lock your doors? There must be a few more rational options before shooting someone comes into play.

I come from a country where semi auto weapons are illegal. High powered calibres (.308, 7.62 mm, .303, and quite a few more) are restricted to people that actually have a real need for them (like shooting feral buffalo). Pump action shotguns are illegal for the general public and pistol owners must be registered to a club. All firearms must be stored in an approved gun cabinet (bolted to floor and wall). A genuine demonstrated need to own a firearm must be provided when you apply for a firearms license and if you come from the city and haven’t got somewhere to shoot, you’ve got no chance of owning a firearm.

Pretty damn good laws to control who owns firearms and very effective at reducing gun crimes and gun theft. I used to be a proffesional shooter, I was involved with feral animal culls from the air and ground and owned a few semi auto rifles. I changed lines of employment but still owned the rifles, when the laws here changed regarding gun ownership I happily handed over my stash because I had no need to own a semi automatic .308 rifle. Unless your killing buffalo, donkeys, goats or elephants for a living, why do you need such weapons??

I’ve still got a single shot .22LR, the deadliest rifle ever, in the right hands.

And here’s a “fuck” cuz it’s the pit

Why did you want to own your AK-47 copy then?

As I’ve stated, I’m not from the states, and share a probably very common perception that americans, in general, are a bit “gun mad”. Just trying to grasp why an accountant needs/wants an AR-15, as an example. Why the fascination with firearms?
