Renewable Petroleum, Redux. It could be! Observation of a Hydrocarbon in the making.

Methane, a simple hydrocarbon, has formed under conditions found in the Earth’s mantle.

The article strongly suggests that more complex hydrocarbons may form there too.

There has been a great deal of intrest in this topic on the SDMB in the past, so I thought I’d post a link.

Thanks for the link, I have found this topic interesting and followit when I can.

Oh, very cool. Thanks for the link.

Yes, that sounds like a great idea. Let’s pull even MORE carbon out of the Earth and throw it at the atmosphere.

Not that we can.

But the very idea…

This is not the solution.

We need to get on a closed-carbon circuit.

Why the hell don’t we get on Biodiesel?
Here we have a plant that matures in 3 years ( I believe for the purpose of creating oil) It grows in the desert. It is so easy to make (Alcohol plus a catalyst [lye I believe]). I imagine that there are a lot of places that could grow this stuff. And aren’t we paying farm subsidies all over the Western world? Make them grow oil-producing plants and we could kill two birds with one stone.

But nobody wants to drive a diesel? Half of all new cars in Europe run on diesel and they are comprable to the performance of gassers for most purposes.

Think about it… To burn fuel, which releases CO2 and other carbons, you have have plants, which need CO2 to grow. I don’t know if this system is perfect, but it sounds a hell of a lot better than digging this toxic stuff out of the ground and burning it in our atmosphere. We just keep on adding and adding CO2.
