Repairing water damage to a book

A book of mine (large format, glossy paper, black and white photos) got wet and now the first 20 pages are cemented together. Any way to un-cement them?

Thank you.

We had a similar thread a while back about how to rescue a wet book, but it sounds as though yours is no longer wet.

Glossy paper, cemented together…don’t like the sound of that. You might try a little rubbing alcohol along the edges of a couple of pages and see if it makes them easier to separate. If it does, then very carefully and slowly start spreading more alcohol between the pages (with a q-tip, say) while slowly separating them. But watch out! There might be something in the paper surface that doesn’t react well to the alcohol, so try this very gingerly at first on a small area.

You probably need to contact a large library of museum for their conservator’s advice.
Glossy book paper has been sized with who knows what to make the glossy surface that supports the printed ink image.
Once wet, pressed together, and drieid it is more like a piece of cardboard than pages of a book. :frowning:

Contact the conservator of a large city library or museum for their advice.
The glossy paper is sized with who knows what to support the printed ink image.
Once water soaked, pressed together, and dried out is is likely impossible to separate the pages without ruining the photos.
If the pages are photographic paper it likely a gelatin coating not amenable to separation. :frowning:

My experience is that books or magazines with coated paper are a lost cause. The coating turns into a glue when wet.
