Replacing gas cylinder lifting rams (?)

I have an '07 Dodge Caravan with a lifting rear door. One of the lifting rams broke, and I bought a pair of factory replacements.

Problem is, the cylinders come extended, and I cannot get the mounting studs to line up with the holes, because the cylinders are about a half inch too long while extended. I lack the strength to get them compressed by brute force. Anyone know the trick to getting the new ones on?

You might have to take them both off so you can move the tailgate past the normal open position to give yourself enough wiggle room to get them on. Have an assistant hold it open or use a broomstick.

Otherwise double check that they’re the correct length. The only time I’ve ever had trouble changing those is when the place sold me the wrong ones.
