Replacing trim boards?

I would like to replace the rotting wood trim boards around my garage windows with the plastic trim boards that never rot. Is it as simple as measuring the size of the old boards and replacing them with the same size ones? Is a nail gun nessary or can a hammer do the job. What about counter sinking the nail holes and putting them so you can’t see it. I think the boards are 1x.

It is that easy. You can use a hammer and a counter sink. You’ll just cover the nail holes with some caulk to match the color of the boards, or paint them. You do need a countersink or at least a punch to finish driving the nails because you don’t want to hit that plastic with the hammer. You don’t need exactly the same size either, they just have to be big enough to close up the space around the window window, and they can be bigger than the old ones.

Are the corners mitered on this trim? That’s usually not done on the exterior because it leaves a way for water to drip in. Typically the board on top of the window spans the full width of the window and side trim (or even wider). The sides go under it all the way down to the bottom of the trim under the window, and then the bottom trim piece fits between the side pieces.
