"Reported" or not? I've lost track

Most of the spam reports I make are the OP of their own thread, so there are no other posts they might be confused with. This is at least partly because I’ll open up threads with suspect titles just to check them.

Recently we’ve been getting a lot of thread titles of this sort, which seem as if they might make sense but are just a gibberish of random words strung together.

The brand concept equity
Classifying maths sorting
The beauty of ultraviolet rays
The time and order proximity
The strong level of persona
The variations of multiplexes
The evergreen sachi

And then there’s ones like these, which are just a little more obvious:

fdsghj nbncvjhg mnmkbvkl
ADDERALL 30mg,ROXYS,HYDRO, OXYS, MANDRAX (QUAALUDE),ACTAVIS,PERCS, DILUADID, FOR SALE .TEXT(405) 30

Maybe it’s just a spelt-check problem … those happen sometimes.

Don’t most of these contain reddit links? Can these be blocked somehow?

Roxys, Oxys and Percs? Oh, my.

Are they real reddit links? I’ve never clicked on one. They say reddit.com but they don’t follow the “Reddit - Dive into anything” convention.

This was one that I reported, but it’s not actually one that I opened because the title looked suspect. I actually opened it because I thought it would be about the performance of various sorting algorithms, a topic that would interest me (and a textbook example in every course about algorithms ever).

I would also have opened up “the beauty of ultraviolet rays”, had I seen it.

Yep, I clicked on the first one of these I saw to make sure it was spam.

I think the idea is that reddit moves so fast, it’s easier for the spam to get buried, lost and not reported in the traffic.

I just report any post a mod makes. Overflowing box and they know someone read their post… it’s an extra helping of love.

The one currently in the Election forum is a real reddit link.
edited to add: As is one that just got posted in Café Society.

I haven’t clicked on any of them myself, but my understanding is that they actually go to streaming sites.

I don’t know enough about vBulletin to be sure.

If it’s the one titled “Human ancestor walked with Lucy,” which I just zapped, although it went to reddit it was actually a streaming link.

Same with the one in Elections.

Quite a nice poem. I’d edit out a couple of the “the”'s ,— maybe from lines 4 and 7. But otherwise, a good effort.

Several of them sound like Big Bang Theory episodes. Maybe Raj lost his job.

Or album titles. Maybe post-Roger Waters Pink Floyd or Tangerine Dream.

Oh! Okay, this is new to me.

I always thought posting “reported” was just a cute way of “junior modding.” I thought the effect was the equivalent of saying, “This post is so bad, I reported it. That’s how bad it is!”

I’ll stop thinking that and take the view you recommend. Ignorance fought! Thanks!

It’s fine when it’s something obvious like spam or a thread move. However, when used for things that are more of a judgement call, like insults, trolling, etc., it can be junior modding. So I would restrict posting “reported” to the former situations.

Ah! Okay, even better. Context and all that. (Sigh! Why’s the world gotter be so complicated!)

Reported.

Well it is a post about spam.
