I think on CNN the other day, one news commentator said that some of the asylum seekers have court appointments on Monday, some in Seattle and some in San Antonio. Perhaps they can attend the appointments via Zoom or some other remote software?
It definitely won’t. The level of thinking needed to recognize the deplorable hypocrisy and hatred in his actions just does not exist in his supporters.
I chatted w/ a guy across the street (suburban Chicago) this morning. I knew he had a place in Wisconsin where he had been spending a lot of time. I also suspected he was pretty wealthy. I jokingly asked if he was going to be staying in the neighborhood for a while. He said something like, “I’ll be heading back next weekend. Gotta avoid the IL taxes.” So I asked, “Wisconsin is your place of residence?” He said, “No, I’m a resident of Florida. No income or estate taxes!”
Hmm. Nice to know what they value spending on.
It’s probably neutral for Cubans. The unique treatment that Cubans enjoy under federal immigration law means few Cuban migrants would likely be swept up in these stunts. But Florida Cubans are already a Republican-leaning block (they drifted away a little bit during the Obama Administration but came back strong to Trump). What was surprising in 2020 was how much Trump improved his standing among non-Cuban Hispanics with roots in Central and South American countries. These communities might be reachable on the issue, which is why DeSantis is making sure it’s not their friends and neighbors who are being put on a plane to Martha’s Vineyard.
It worked fine for Fidel Castro, so why not?
Of course Fidel wanted to hurt Florida and the USA, so if you don’t, disregard this advice.
I’ve heard this was exaggerated. The reports were based on Election Day polls. The problem was selection bias.
Republican candidates had been telling their supporters to avoid mail-in voting. So the people who voted on Election Day were more likely to be Republicans than the average voter overall. And this cut across all demographics.
So the percentage of Hispanics who were voting on Election Day went up for Trump but there was not a similar percentage change in Hispanics who voted early.
It’s hard to pin down definitively, but most of the post-election analysis has concluded there was about an 8 to 10 percentage point swing among Hispanic voters toward Trump from 2016 to 2020. Here’s one article about a Pew “validated voter” study. This wasn’t based on exit polling, but rather a post-election surveys of voters whom they could match to public records as having voted.
So “owning the libs” is the point-how much of an appreciable bounce will it give him? Or is it a renewable resource? A well that will never run dry?
How deep is the well of stupidity and bigotry that he’s tapping into?
Seems pretty bottomless.
I wonder if this campaign will fizzle out when word spreads among the migrants and they refuse to play along? Thus far, afaik, they’ve all been lured in by deceit. No guns. Yet.
Perhaps. However, those that got lured into this stunt evidently made out pretty well, with the locals helping and supporting them, and treating them like human beings. IMHO Democrats should rub that aspect of this whole thing in DeSantis’ and Abbott’s faces. Living well is the best revenge.
If immigrants are indeed beneficial, as most thoughtful people believe, then every one that we can import from the stupid parts of the country into the smarter parts is a win for our side. How nice to get TX, et al to subsidize our gain and their loss.
MAGAts’ stupidity is bottomless. Fortunately, their wallets are not.
So now the latest talking point I’m seeing is that the costs of bussing / flying migrants out of Texas is $14 million as opposed to keeping and housing them in Texas which would cost $850 million.
That’s the MAGAt response to the issue of “the cost to Texas and Florida taxpayers” of transporting these migrants to Martha’s Vineyard, etc.
Clearly, they’re not flying or bussing all of the migrants in Texas out of the state, so some of that estimated $850 million will still be spent.
I hope the thought of that money going to make migrants miserable keeps them warm when the power grid goes down. Again.
Seriously. This winter will be a good test - I am thinking an ad campaign with some of the people caught-up in this: “Muchas gracias, Gobernador Abbott! For saving us from your stupidity! [immigrants in cozy, warm surroundings enjoying holiday-time in Chicago]”
This is the thing that drives me absolutely crazy. I follow Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) on Twitter. He’s my Senator, with Lyin’ Ted being the other. Anyway, Corny loves to post things like “A jillion dollars worth of fentanyl seized at border!” and crow that it shows that Biden’s open border policy is putting real Texans like me in danger.
The drugs were SEIZED! There is no “open border”. The cops got the drugs!! Everything is working as intended. The drugs didn’t make it onto Texas streets to somehow endanger me, a non-drug user.
