Do you support policies that turn away desperate economic migrants seeking a better life for their family? Or do you oppose policies that turn away desperate economic migrants seeking a better life for their family?
Whichever one is your position why do you feel the fact that people are pushing the opposite way means you don’t have to advocate for your position?
Yep, Chicagoan here. My alderperson’s office literally had to cut off donations intended for the recent arrivals within days because they ran out of space to store them. As a rule, Chicago welcomes immigrants.

When I lived in Bible-belt Missouri there were a LOT of church-sponsored billboards wailing about the horrors of abortion. For some strange reason every pic they showed was of a cherubic 3-month old white baby who’d been saved by their parent’s not choosing abortion.

I think they could be, but are they legally allowed to work while their cases are pending?
If so, then there’s a whole lot that needs to be done. If not, then they are by definition going to need to be using services, and chances are, they will end up being deported and the communities that supported them will not get the benefit of their work.
Now, my point in that is not to say that immigrants don’t have value, but that our pretty stupidly designed immigration system certainly does its best to eliminate that.
Many are asylum seekers and are going through the years-long process of pursuing this in the courts (which is entirely legal and proper). In the meantime, yes, they’re allowed to work here. The New York Times had an article (gift link) yesterday about one guy who is working to support himself and his son back home in Venezuela while waiting for his case to be heard.
I want to believe you, because that’s how it should be, but everything I look at says that they have to wait at least 365 days from when they apply for asylum before they can apply for a work permit. (Also in my research, I found that it used to be 150 days until it was increased to 365 under Trump.)
That’s not to say that they couldn’t be working under the table, but that’s a whole different story.
Wait. Now I can see why conservatives are all up-in-arms over this. These people are presumed to be sponging off the system while they wait? For a whole year? And TFG made it so they have to sponge even longer than before? But hey, rather than address the problem head-on, it’s much easier to grab headlines with other stunts.
Hey c’mon, those private prisons aren’t gonna fill themselves! And we certainly don’t want to have to resort to filling them with white people. Think of the poor prison-industrial complex.

There is the scene from Cheech and Chong where they intentionally get deported in order to get free travel to their cousin’s wedding. (Or something like that, it’s been a while.)
