Admittedly these are MSMBC links and so weighted towards the side of liberalism, and I’d reflexively say these won’t work out as they 're intended, but you can (almost) never predict what will work in politics. The GOP seems to have wedded itself pretty firmly to white nationalism and anti-trans hysteria, but even a few voters shifting over might be enough.
I think a trans person voting for Republicans is clearly voting against their own interest, since Republicans want to ban them from public life.
Maybe billionaire trans folks?
Republicans work very hard to make it more difficult for Blacks to vote, get into schools, etc. I guess if you’re a billionaire Black person, that sweet tax break might make it all worthwhile.
For both, I can’t imagine that’s a big voting bloc.
ETA: I don’t even know who, other than billionaires, aren’t voting against their interest with today’s Republican party. I guess if you’re hoping for a nationwide ban on abortion, but Trump just came out against that.
ETA2: Even billionaires should worry about the end to democracy that Trump is actually promising.
I mean, is the Republican party even capable of reaching out to black or LGBTQ voters? I can see how they can reach out to, for instance, business owners, including business owners who happen to be black or LGBTQ. But is there anything they can say or do to specifically target minorities? I don’t think they even know how, and if they did, I don’t think they’d be willing to do it. They might try, but a lot of that effort seems to be things like Trump saying “Hey, they’re arresting me, that makes me just like all of you black people, because you’re all criminals, so you black criminals should vote for me”. Which is, of course, totally idiotic, and if any of them knew any actual black people, they’d know how idiotic it was.
"(Republican) Party officials said their voter outreach efforts will highlight resident concerns including inflation, rise in robberies and carjackings, and the Biden administration’s handling of migration at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Café owner Shana Gray, who voted for Trump in 2020 and is planning to do so again, said inflation has been hard on local Black-owned businesses. “I used to get like 40 to 50 customers an hour. Now I’m lucky if I get that many a day,” she said."
It stands to reason* that quite a few black voters are as willing as their white counterparts to overlook Trump’s grotesqueries and crimes in favor of what they think are his stands on issues that matter to them.
Inflation and crime are both down. Is there an increase in carjackings? What can the Feds even do about that. Biden’s attempt to do something at the border was stymied by Republicans at the direction of Trump. I guess if you’re a thoughtful voter, you’re not voting for Trump anyway.
This. You might hear how “Saint Louis is awash in crime!” just to grab a city at random. But is there more crime near you? And which would tip your perception of an increase in crime? News about it, or first-hand reports?
Yeah, talking about crime is non-stop on right-wing sources, but those folks are already voting for Trump. Can you imagine being a minority and listening to that racist Jesse Watters? Or, watching them demonize trans folks and continuing to watch and support them?
I think a lot of people on the left are somewhat unaware of /unwilling to acknowledge the power of aspirational thought when it comes to politics. The Republicans (on paper anyway), offer a largely unfettered, small-business friendly environment, even if it comes at the cost of socially oppressive and discriminatory policies. Lower taxes, less regulation, lower interest rates, etc…
That’s an important thing, if you’re a small business owner and you’re trying to grow your business and personally thrive by doing so. Or if that’s your plan to achieve wealth, as well.
So people in that situation are confronted by a choice- do they vote Republican and vote for the policies that they perceive are going to be more conducive to their business success and prosperity, or do they vote Democrat and for policies that are going to be more conducive to them personally, but not necessarily as friendly to their business and (perceived) future prosperity?
For a lot of people, money talks louder than anything else, and they vote Republican as a result. Now whether these policies are actually more conducive to small business success is another question, but that’s the narrative the GOP is pushing.
If you’re a black MAGAt, or a Trans MAGAt, you have just become a large fish in a small pond. Your voice is now outsized in your MAGAt group. You’ll be feted and invited to MAGAt gatherings/rallys because they want to show you off as their token. You get to feel important and needed.
Don’t underestimate the human ability to put logic aside when it comes to the endorphins they get from feeling like an important member of an in-group (even if that in-group wants to limit their rights)
This same logic also applies to high wage employees.
The thing they believe, because the Rs told them so, is that they will get the equivalent of a $50K/year raise if those tax and spend Democrats can be removed and the virtuous low-tax Rs put in their place.
They want the raise, therefore they vote R. Nothing else is as important as that raise. More accurately, none of anything else in politics matters to them at all. Because a lot of the folks the Rs are targeting to be harmed aren’t them or anyone they know. Their annual tax bite is the one and only metric they have for politics.
Of course the actual tax change they get is maybe a few hundred bucks. But they won’t notice the disconnect because the low-tax preaching is still going on: “We’re one step closer to the Promised Land; just keep voting R for ever-lower taxes.”
It works, and it works real well. So the Rs keep doing it.
