Republican Party Campaign Tactics

Shah Jehan: No, I don’t recall any residency problems when he ran the first time. I’d assumed he was a MA resident, so I was surprised when I same his name in the news in connection with the SLC olympics. I must confess, however, I was smiling quietly to myself over the reports I was reading, considering how he had campaigned as the ethical, honest alternative.

I just wanted to pop this up again to point out that, true to form, a counter-example has emerged. Behold the successful Democrat “Boogie Nights” campaign.

As a Dem, I’d like to be the first to say that this is bullshit. Montana was considered a safe bet for the Dems in that Senate race, and there was no reason to use this sort of vile baiting.

Shame on you, Max Baucus. Hope you savor your victory as if it were a tall glass of straight vermouth.

But the significant thing about the Montana is that it was done - if indeed it was done at all - subtly enough so as not to overshadow the Baucus campaign. In fact, subtly enough that there are a host of Dopers in GD vehemently denying that any homophobia was involved.

(I personally have no opinion at all as to what connotations were in the ad.)
