Republican Senators dishonor themselves

Fair enough, then. I withdraw my support for this pitting.

The pitting is still valid, it just needs to be expanded to dems and pubs and everyone who votes for them. (and all non-voters since they let it happen, and everyone who voted for a third party, because they threw their vote away)

I’ve long since abandoned the idea of holding public officeholders to a high standard. I think holding them to the standard of “better than the other guys” is about all we’ve got.

Article 2, Section 2 of the Constitution (duties of the President) states:

How in the world did we degenerate down to the level of having the Senate give a proctological exam to every nominee?

This doesn’t surprise me in the least. I never thought that the Republicans would honor their word. That they did it on such a superbly qualified candidate who isn’t really controversial is not surprising either.

Because the founders either wanted the Senate to determine their own level of involvement, or were stupid and weren’t specific enough. “Advice and consent” is pretty vague.

Why isn’t Sessions the supreme lap dog on the list?

Hypocritical politicians are hypocritical.

In the Federalist Papers, Hamilton (I think) argued that the senate would only vote down judges in the most extreme circumstances, because senators are electable, and wouldn’t want to risk their reputations on an issue of politics before honest judicial qualifications. He also said the president would be persuaded to only appoint judges that were decent, for fear of the embarrassment of the senate finding disfavor.

It’s almost sweet that he really seems to have believed it.

Sessions gave a speech in front of the Senate saying Harriet Meyers was the single most qualified Supreme Court nominee in the country. I shuddered at how he could say it. He is a partisan hack to the nth degree.
While he was giving the speech, the rest of the Repubs were trying to derail her nomination. They knew she was a joke and impossible to defend.
How the hell Alabamans can vote for him over and over is a mystery to me.
When he gets in front of the senate, I feel embarrassed for him.
