My husband and I would like to start giving to a charity that sponsors children…the kind where we pay for their education, clothes, etc. on a monthly basis, and we occasionally get letters, pictures, and whatnot. Ideally, we’d like to sponsor more than one child, actually.
There are several organizations out there that do this sort of thing, but we’d like to give to one that uses the majority (if not all) of our donations for the child, and not administration. We’d also obviously like to make sure it’s a legitimate organization and not someone who writes the letters themselves while pocketing our cash.
Any Dopers donate to or work for any such organization that they’d recommend?
From http://www.saveachildsheart.com: Save A Child’s Heart is one of the largest undertakings in the world providing urgently needed pediatric heart surgery and follow-up care for children from third world and developing countries.
All children, regardless of race, religion, sex, color, or financial consideration receive the best possible care that modern medicine has to offer. Our entire surgical, intensive care, and nursing staff substantially volunteer their services and donate their time!
Aha, I just came in to reccommend it! I just got an e-mail that Senani is the head of her class!
To recap what I said in the other thread, it’s a small but reputable charity wherein every penny you send goes to your orphan. They can do that because other donors are “program sponsors”, where they give the money for administration. Right now I believe they’re still looking for sponsors for girls in their two orphanages in Sri Lanka. Thats www.orphansponsorship.org. They account for every dime they spend to you, too.
