This, at least, is no reason at all that I can see. No, they can’t defend themselves, they got banned. Why are we protecting them?
Because the SDMB is after the truth, not cheap shots. Sure, maybe he did troll, but that doesn’t mean he is a pedophile.
And what is your purpose in continuing to insult someone who is gone? Just being mean?
There are longtime posters here who’ve been banned. Maybe they’re no longer part of our community, but they’re part of its history. It should be possible to discuss them, in situations where it’s natural to do so, without having to worry about “did I say something against the rules because it’s critical of a banned poster?”
Why restrict what people want to say unnecessarily?
I think we should be allowed to say things unless there’s a good reason why not. I don’t think there’s a good reason to limit the discussion of people after they have been banned.
And the SDMB is after whatever the member’s at the time are after, and if a few of them want to badmouth a banned troll in the Pit after they’ve been banned, so what? No one makes you read everything everyone writes here.

They idea that we should avoid feeding trolls has always seemed a dumb one. They aren’t here anymore, so why care if we feed them?
The main thing with the Pitting is that, unless they do something after being banned, I can’t see much reason to need to start a new pit thread on them. Sure, keep the old one open, but a new one seems pointless.
And if they do something after being banned, it’ll be as their real name, not their Doper name.
But, hey, since there’s no reason to do it, there’s little reason for a rule against it. Still, if someone does come in and decides to pit a Doper for something they did years ago, I’d expect that thread to go rather badly for them.
