I lived in NYC for years and my desire to move has nothing to do with recent events. I don’t have a family or a job to worry about. I’m not necessarily talking about some island paradise. I think the only necessity is that it have highspeed internet access (LOL, but im serious.) I’d prefer if it had a moderately ok phone system. I really want it to be beautiful and have a pleasant people. My first thought is Spain. I am used to the city and still need my neighbors to be moderately cultured and well, yes, somewhat americanized. If you recommend a country, throw in an idea for a city as well. I don’t want a big urban sprawl ala NYC. Pretty women never hurts either 
I was going to suggest Sydney Australia until I saw you didn’t want urban sprawl. Sydney and the surronding area are urbanized and very spread out…probably more like L.A. than NY. It is also beautiful, with a pleasant climate, culture, and friendly people who probably wouldn’t mind if a “Yank” wanted to live in their midst. Oh, yes, and platoons of pretty women, with cute Australian accents. Perhaps someone else can suggest a smaller city/town in Australia?
I think Puerto Rico is wonderful. The weather and the beaches are so beautiful. It’s not expensive either, as long as you avoid the hotels. Everyone there is casual and relaxed, it would be a nice change from the East Coast.
