Resilient Body From Genetics

Okay, so… Some of my family lived with quite the hard lifestyle and seem to have a tolerance to everything pain included… It’s kind of ridiculous. I was wondering if this runs in the genes or if it’s just luck. I have an example.

My father is a type 2 diabetic (He’s currently in his 60s) and has put himself through more than any human, especially a diabetic, should be able to live through. He started smoking when he was in junior high, and by the time he was in his late 20s he was a 3 pack a day smoker. The cigarettes he used to smoke were actually taken off the shelf due to the fact that they were too unhealthy to be legally sold (I don’t remember the brand). I think they had too much tar or something in them. He also started drinking a lot starting when he was 17. By a lot I mean a mininum of 120 beers a week. He once downed around 50 in a few hours. Now, he damaged his vascular system due to drinking and smoking with diabetes and had to go into the hospital; he stopped drinking, but still smokes a bare minimum of 2 packs a day. When they were running tests they told me that he had the liver of a younger man than he, and they wouldn’t of known he smoked less he checked the box.

He apparently had quite a tolerance to everything too… after his surgery he was taking almost a gram of oxycodone a day. The funny thing was that if you didn’t know that he was on pain killers, you couldn’t tell. He acted normal. It seems like he has a tolerance to everything. He also never got hung over. My great grandmother lived to be 99 smoking like a chimney and drinking like a fish too. She wasn’t diabetic, so she had no real health problems…

I was just wondering if this was just luck, or if it somehow runs in the genes, and if not… how the hell is it possible?
