My brother’s 60th birthday is coming up, and I realized I needed a really special gift for him. When the original Bacon Salt thread came out, I followed it with rapt attention, but I’ve been too broke to order any. I had mentioned the existence of Bacon Salt to my brother, and his ears perked right up, so I decided this is the perfect gift for his birthday. I first checked to see if any stores in Ohio are carrying it yet, but there is nothing in the Cleveland area…so I decided to order.
But what torture! See, I want some for me, too! And some for a gift for my son-in-law -to-be for Christmas. And they’ve come out with a new version that is gluten-free, which is perfect for my brother since one of his daughters has celiac disease…but I want him to have flavors, too! Since we’re family we could just split the jars into smaller portions, but that doesn’t seem right for a birthday gift…so I spent $43 on Bacon Salt…a four-pack for my brother, a three-pack for the SIL’s Christmas gift (well, maybe Christmas in July) and a single jar of the Original flavor for me (I’ll borrow a bit of the Hickory and Peppered down the line to see if I like them).
Now I have to start going through old threads to compile some recipes to print out and give him along with his gift. This might just be his best birthday gift ever from me!
And now I’m thinking maybe I should have just gone whole-hog and ordered their Office Pak and gotten 6 gift packs for the price of five and had gifts for every single person I know… I believe I’m getting carried away…oh my.
If you’d like to save the search hamsters some time and have recipes to share, you could leave them here for me…I’d be ever so grateful…
I was disappointed that you can’t really heat it, as in cook with it. It’s great on a fried egg, or sprinkled on a tomato. Even salad! But it doesn’t retain any bacon flavor when cooked.
It ain’t bacon, fer sure. But it has baconesque qualities, and given its caloric and prep-time advantages, I still think it’s a winner.
This morning my omelet came with a surprise sprinkling of Bacon Salt - gotta love Mr. Cinnamon!
I also like to cook up a Boca Burger, top it with avocado slices, and sprinkle with Bacon Salt. Something that delicious shouldn’t be good for you, but it is!
I love it. I add it to sandwiches, and put it on potatoes all the time. It’s a good hamburger topping too, when you don’t have time to make actual bacon. It actually is a really nice addition to our Chicken-à-la-King recipe, and there is a cheesy risotto packet from the grocery store which goes from bland to addictively good with Bacon Salt on it.
We don’t really have an recipes… we just add it to stuff at random and see how it tastes!
Last October my daughter’s Xanga page cried out for things she missed after having moved from Michigan to Nevada. She missed Koegel’s franks (sent her a case), Vernor’s Ginger Ale (ditto), & smoked salt (screeching halt). What to substitute? Thanks, wonderful dopers for letting me know about Bacon Salt. I sent her an order. Satisfaction!
She makes vegetarian potato soup & adds bacon salt, to family acclaim. Wonderful stuff.
Oooh, potato soup sounds good. I’m getting a bit antsy here, reading all the recipes on the website and in the past Bacon Salt threads. My brother’s birthday isn’t until after the Fourth of July, but I want it here NOW!
I have to point out that the Bacon Salt guys are just fantastic people all around. They sent me a gift a couple of months ago just because I was the lucky dog who started the thread here, and apparently a lot of Dopers have helped contribute to their success.
I have had occasion to gift much Bacon Salt. And Way Too Happy’s recipe simply can’t be improved upon.
