Responsible gun onwers: please demonstrate your non-nuttery.

Would last the Freak Brothers about 20 hours.

More or less, depending on what they got into first.

Ether disinclines you do much else. Especially smoke.

Hi, my name is trupa, and I’m a Canadian gun owner.

While I applaud the purpose of this thread, allow me to take mild exception to the assumption built-in to the subsequent responses that only agnostic/atheist socially liberal people are reasonable.

I am a (mildly, by American standards) politically conservative Catholic man, married, with one son, and living in Canada. I am an Engineer by training and disposition, although I seem to have picked up an MBA along the way. Right now, I am a stay at home-Dad. I don’t think this makes me, how was it put? a “fascist homophobic religious nut
The people I meet at shooting events are mostly of a technical disposition, and over half are professionals. Demographically, they are typically either young, single engineers and coders, or empty-nesters now with more time on their hands. A surprisingly large proportion have their private pilot’s license. A significant number of paramedics and firefighters also show up.

At the last shoot, casual conversation touched on: differences between flying fixed-wing vs. helicopters, workings of the broadcast radio business, strategies to make university more affordable four your children, and a young fellow solicited and received some advice on whether to remain in a well-paying software coding job he didn’t like vs. trying to find another position as a hardware/RF engineer, which he had much preferred (consensus was in favour of finding a happier job asap).

Any references to one’s martial skills with firearms was humorous and self-deprecating, with people telling funny stories of how they had goofed-up in past competitions. Several people there later admitted having recently completed some time in the Canadian Forces, but casually and almost a bit reluctantly. There was a complete absence of any mall-ninjas or camo-clad special operative wannabes.

There were two father & son (11 & 13 yr old) pairs who were having a very nice time together and giving Mom a nice time-off.

There was no talk of politics of any sort, nor any mention of the vast liberal bias of the main-stream media. There were none of the incendiary right wing diatribes and rants I used to hear regularly when I was a caddy at a very posh golf club.

I own a .45 stainless Kimber 1911 and an FN Browning in 9mm. I currently have no interests in rifles (too much like calculating a missile launch, imho) or revolvers (don’t like DA triggers) I enjoy the challenge of developing the physical skills required to shoot a semi-automatic hand-gun accurately. I find it both exciting and interesting.

Well, my husband is the gun person in the family, but I’ll tell you about him.

White male, mid-30’s, happily married with two children (8 and 5). We live in Northern CA and he is co-owner of a software startup that deals in high-level scientific design, that is, software that involves a lot of physics and calculus and so on–currently he’s doing radiation oncology. We met at Berkeley, where we both went to college.

He is a politics/news junkie, registered Independent. He leans libertarian really. Hates SUVs and Al Gore equally–while he loathes environmentalist rhetoric, he’s all for conservation and clean energy, etc. Is very big on separation of church and state. We are religious and attend the LDS Church. He doesn’t like creationists, ID, or militant atheists who vilify religious ‘idiots.’ And we homeschool for academic reasons and because we like it.

He has a Beretta and really enjoys target shooting. He’s got a wish-list of other guns. He’d like me to learn too but guns bore me silly, so he gets together with his brother and they talk for hours.

Female, 27, left-leaning (Democrat in name, though I’ve been known to reject Dem candidates and vote Rep on occasion especially on the local level). I’ve been shooting since I was a wee sprout, and was always raised to be very respectful around guns. I own a .22 single-shot rifle, which was gifted to me upon completing the fifth grade and a hunter’s ed course. I am currently wanting a 12 gauge for home defense/fun. Husband is 36 and more or less the same as I am politically, and owns an Armalite AR-10A2; he bought it because he enjoys the craftsmanship and it is really a joy to shoot (I love it too, especially when the old local rednecks crap their pants to see a young woman flinging empty .308 brass like they were rice at a wedding :D). He snapped it up before the ban, although it is registered.

Mid-40’s, married female, politically conservative, solid Baptist upbringing, with rifles and shotguns behind every bedroom door along with the fishing rods. After marriage, I still have an old .410 that is not registered mainly because it was from my great-grandfather, made just after the Civil War. Wouldn’t know how to even go about it. My husband is definitely city-bred, and doesn’t like our kids handling firearms, but my 13-yr old son just bought himself a major deer-hunting bow.

36 year old white Texan male, married, no kids, living within the Dallas city limits. Fairly conservative in most ways, but socially liberal enough to be completely baffled by all the hoopla about gay marriage and abortion.

I have the following arsenal (believe it or not, I’m not a rabid Ruger fan, but their guns seem to be either best-in-class (22/45, 357 and 10/22) and/or inexpensive) :

Ruger 6" SP-101 357 revolver
Ruger 9mm automatic
Ruger 22/45 automatic pistol
Ruger 10/22 rifle

2 Remington 870 shotguns - one 20 gauge Wingmaster, and one 12 gauge Express model.

1 ancient Stevens 620 12 ga shotgun

1 Czech vz24 8mm Mauser military surplus rifle.
I like to go skeet shooting, although I’m not particularly good, I occasionally like to hunt doves and ducks, and I’m planning on a feral hog hunt sometime in the near future. I also like going to the range and shooting at targets with my wife, my buddies, my father and my brother (when I’m in Houston).

No carry permit, and don’t really feel a need for one. Don’t have a gun safe, but I don’t have children either. I do have a gun closet though.

I agree with the posters who believe that it’s a states-rights issue. The conditions are different across the nation, along with the gun cultures. Here, among middle class white folk, it’s very common, if not expected that most families will have at least some kind of firearm, whether it’s a shotgun, a hunting rifle, or a home-defense 2" 38 special. Nobody cares much at all- it’s just the way things are.

Male liberal 56; I gotta gun! Uh, Somewhere around here…let me see. Oh yeah, locked up in my closet with a trigger guard, too bad I don’t know where the keys are. It’s some kind of small pistol, can’t remember the last time I cleaned it. Really long time since I shot it.

Guess I’m not a very good gun owner.

I gotta Knife!

Besides the general bias of this message board, there’s a “bitter people clinging to guns and religion” thing going on in the States that would be rather nice to dispel. Nothing against Christian gun owners, but the assumption that all gun owners are conservative bible-thumping Republicans is annoying and inaccurate.

Of course everyone knows Canadians are far too civilized to own guns, what with their toques and Nanaimo bars, so who are you really?

I’m a divorced white male, 52, who owns three handguns and one shotgun. I’ve had a concealed carry permit for the last 15 years. I support background checks, and wish our country would simply enforce the laws already on the books, and mete out the penalties imposed, rather than farting around and passing new, useless, warm n’ fuzzy feel good legislation which does squat other than pander to special interest groups.

Your religion, sexual orientation, and similar things are none of my damn business, and mine are none of yours, either. All I ask of my fellow citizen is to abide by the law, and if you find yourself on the wrong side of it, accept punishment for what you’ve done as an adult, and don’t be a whiny ass about it.

On the third day, God created the Remington Bolt Action rifle. So man could fight the dinosaurs…and the Homosexuals. Amen!

No, He created the Garand.

That was the 6th day. Then he rested.

I support gun rights because I support the 10th Amendment, something Der Trihs and a lot of others seem to have forgotten about. I also think it applies recursively, as people like Jefferson obviously would have intended: Any powers not reserved for the federal, state, county, or local governments are retained by the people. The fact Der Trihs apparently thinks this makes me a fascist nutbar says all I need to know about him.

I’m a white male, 37 (at least for the next few days) Own several guns (my inventory has changed slightly) and am on target (HA!) to acquire my final two wishlisters: Barrett 82A1 and the FN Five-Seven.

I’m libertarian at heart, a democrat in my head and a republican in my back pocket. I’m spiritual but not necessarily religious, married, dog parent with no kids and live in the heart of Chicago.

I collect guns because the hobby interests me. I shoot because I have to and it’s a skill I enjoy improving that might, one day, serve me very well. I have a shotgun and handguns for home defense (the main handguns have the first half of the first clips filled with Glaser safety slugs and the rest with 147gr JHP). Which, technically, I don’t keep at home, so the shotgun fills in the gaps until hizzoner gets his head out of his ass and lifts this stupid “ban”.

I don’t hunt and though I find the prospect unsettling, I understand the necessity on some level.

Mrs. Jockey knows full well how to shoot because I taught her how not a week after her 3rd floor walk-up apartment was nearly broken into (rear door was kicked in) by a bad guy who was running from the police along the rooftops.

I don’t care if you want to marry a goat and live in a meadow, that’s your business and if you want to abort your half-goat baby, I don’t give a rat’s ass.

I don’t think that marriage is the cornerstone of modern society, I think capitalism is the cornerstone of modern society and think that world peace will come from the spread of that, as opposed to the bullshit disguised as democracy we’re currently spreading.

I think that keeping America safe helps the world remain so and I think that helping the world remain so, keeps America safe.

I don’t care who you pray to, meditate about or turn to in times of darkness, just leave my ass alone about it.

I currently own one single rifle, a vintage Soviet M44, and I’ve got a box of rounds for it in the basement. The rifle is in a bag, with the bolt removed, also in the basement.

I hope to (and was recently grudgingly given the go-ahead by the wife) to collect Soviet weapons, from the revolution up to the collapse. Don’t know why, but I love me some Eastern Bloc gear!

I am socially liberal, fiscally conservative. I usually call myself a small l libertarian. Married, non-christian, professional. I have 3 kids, two currently living with me.

I appreciate the history and craftsmanship of firearms, and believe in the right to bear same. I feel this is inshrined in the constitution for a good reason… I’m just not sure what it is.

I will be voting for Obama, if I can figure out how to reregister here in PA (holding my nose, as I don’t like his view on guns, but also know that one man, even the president, would have a hard time getting them gotten rid of).

I am a Christian conservative, Repblican (though that’s been changing of late) who has nothing against homosexuals (unless you’re slow-dancing and then you just can’t help it!) divorced, white, male 47 years old.

I am looking at applying for my concealed-carry permit soon, as it’s legal in Ohio I wish to exercise my right to the permit.

I own non-functioning (at the moment) Soviet rifle, and a non-function 22 taget pistol. If I get serious about the permit I suppose I’ll need to pick up a nice little pistol.

However, I do own over 2 dozen swords, spears, knives and other edged weapons, and the armor to go with them.

Does that count?

White Male, age 29, Democrat by party and social liberal/fiscal conservative by inclination.

I own one shotgun, a 12ga Mossberg 500 pump with adjustable choke that I use for clays/trap/skeet shooting and the very occasional deer. It’s sitting on the table in my locked office with a trigger lock and a action lock, and the only keys for such are in my pocket when I’m awake and in my nightstand when I’m asleep. No kids–when I have them I’ll upgrade to something with a combination lock. The gun is not in a place where my cats can get to it or knock it down. It’s unloaded and the ammo is not in an obvious place–it’s with the clays in the bottom of a cabinet across the room.

The shotgun shares that part of my desk with my swords, knives, and fraternity paddle. It’s basically a display of weapons both functional and simply aesthetically pleasing.

I used to also own an Airsoft AKS74, which had similar precautions except for the action lock–you can put an eye out with that thing.

Ohh, right, I had forgotten about that Obama quote controversy.

Also, allow me to present, for a more American perspective: The Pink Pistols I like and wholeheartedly approve their tag line: “Armed gays don’t get bashed”

What… there’s gotta be some way to keep the polar bears at bay when we take out the trash. Those bears are getting frisky and the wife’s nail files just aren’t cuttin’ it anymore. Why, I’ve broken two this month…

Sorry…I missed the reason for owning the handgun first read through.

Why do you want someone else to own and operate a gun?
