A few months ago I found a link to some guys website where he described how he basically makes this one totally balanced salad-type blend for essentially the whole week in one large container, and it had pictures of he and his family on it. Anybody have a link or better google-fu than I do?
I can’t google fu it, but FWIW I eat some huge, multi-ingredient salads as part of my diet, and I can’t imagine letting it sit one day much less seven. Once made salads need to be eaten in fairly short order or the lettuce or other leaf ingredient quickly wilt into nastiness.
Here’s typical dinner salad
8 oz packet of water packed tuna fish (red not white) (210) cals)
1 small onion diced or 1/2 medium onion ( 15 cals)
2-3 med carrots sliced (70 cals)
1 small Hass avocado (125 cals)
1 of those “family” sized pre-mixed bags of salad (50 cals)
Paul Newman lite balsamic vinaigrette - 2 tablespoons (80 cals)
inexpensive balsamic vinegar sprunker liberally) (approx15 cals)
fresh cracked pepper to taste and maybe some sprinkled Parmesan cheese
2-3 Wasa crackers or other crackers you like (60 -90 calories)
Combine in one Jethro Bodine sized box and mix it up! ( I like to cover it with another bowl and shake) but this requires large hands and strong grip.
Approx 655 calories and will fill absolutely up one large hungry man as a main meal until bedtime
You can substitute a hot Lean Cuisine entree of your liking for the tuna and mix that in for extra deliciousness ,but it needs to be eaten more quickly if you do that as the heat will wilt the lettuce if left on the leaves for an extended period of time.
Pretty sure you’re talking about Dean Pomerleau (the link goes to an interview with him). He’s an active member on the Calorie Restriction Society listserve. He’s also got a website (which is what I think you found) that lists his precisely calculated diet as well as an impressive chart of how his vitals (blood pressure, cholesterol, etc.) have changed over the years with the diet.
But, I can’t seem to find his website anymore, no matter what I try. There used to be a link on the Calorie Restriciton Society page, but the profiles are down. You could go to the email lists and ask him about it.

Seriously disturbing. He looks like he is dead (check out the last picture on his picture progress page).
He looked thin (but in shape) @ 140 lbs and now @ 123 lbs looks as if he’s dying from some wasting disease. Freaky!
He’s supporting 123 lbs on 2000 calories per day which means (if his calculations are correct) he’s burning 16 calories daily per lb of body weight with moderate daily exercise. That’s almost beyond belief unless he’s running marathons.
Yup, thats the guy …
Though the salad he eats looks interesting. I really should write him and ask why he picked those particular veggies to eat … though I dont know what horseradish tree pods are
Granted I like bunny foods, and always have. I am an unregenerate omnivore - I love meat and dairy [ok, and I have a fondness for lobster and shrimp…] but I dont think the way he is going about it is too healthy. Wouldnt it be so damned boring to eat the exxact thing 2x a day forever?
There’s some criticism of just how effective calorie-restricted diets are for humans (in case pictures of that guy’s “progress” aren’t enough of a deterrent): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calorie_restriction I’m not disputing that calorie-restricted diets may work, but in the absence of research, this lifestyle seems to have a very high potential for harm, especially for females.
Though, it could be argued that at this point, people going on calorie-restricted diets should be the last of Americans’ worries… http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/060309/nyth089.html?.v=40
In any case, if you want a fast ‘n’ dirty salad that’ll keep for a few days, this is what I’ve been doing lately:
8 roma tomatoes
3 cukes
Wash. Peel cukes. Cut roma tomatoes in half, lengthwise, and scoop out the seeds (very well, you want minimal icky goo). Do same for cukes. Chop into bits. Add lots of fresh ground pepper. Use minimal amounts of dressing of choice–a little goes a long way (I use fat free italian). toss very well. store in fridge.
This gives me quite generous portions for a few days.
Even if this type of diet did add a few years to your life, I don’t think the side effects are worth it. Not only do you miss out on a great deal of delicious food and drink, accoding to the guy himself:
-His testosterone has dropped to that of a woman.
-He has little to no sex drive
-His wife doesn’t even find him attractive anymore
All that so you live to 90 instead of 85? No thanks…
Where did it say this, I didn’t see this on his website?
Never mind found it here
Jayzuz! He looked better in the first picture after only 7 months on the diet.
I’m not a psychologist but I wouldn’t be surprised if what we’re dealing with here isn’t some sort of eating disorder.
Wasn’t this guy on Penn & Teller’s Bullshit! when they did the segment on America’s obsession with age? If this is the same guy, I believe he has osteoporosis from this CR diet. Perhaps that’s just something that could happen on it but I thought he had it.
Maybe someone can clear that up.
