Resume follow up calls

When sending out resumes, I am always at a loss as to when I should (or shouldn’t) call the recipient to find out where the process is and to possibly forward my own application.

What do you folks feel are the guidelines concerning follow up calls.

I did read the thread on following up after interviews and feel that the idea of getting a definitive date out of the interviewer after which you should have a response is a good one. But that doesn’t quite cover here.

Any comments?

I have, in fact, given an interview to someone who called to see what was going on – but he didn’t get the job, and it turns out that my initial impression (“enh”) was correct. If the screener is on the fence about calling you, it might be a good show of interest from you.

On the other hand, when I’m super busy – and weeks when I’m reviewing resumes and doing interviews, as well as trying to get my actual work done tend to be busy – I don’t necessarily want to have to stop and deal with phone calls from importunate candidates.

Did the resume go to a Human Resources department (who’s presumably set up to deal with inquiries, etc.) or a particualar individual (who may not want to be interrupted)?

If you’re sending out resumes blindly, you can call, but don’t expect to hear much. In several big companies I have worked for, they go into a pool where they are scanned by hiring managers. Very hot ones will go directly to managers, but if yours was hot, you’d get a call.

You might have a better shot if you have done your research and made contact with a particular manager. Unless I have an opening, or know of one, I tell candidates that they will be contacted if there is interest. I don’t know of anyone who routinely responds to blind resum submissions these days - there are far too many, and HR staffing has been cut too much.

Thanks for the responses. That is about what I’ve thought, but it was something I needed to hear anyway. I will be making some calls, but I’m not going to push it much. No need to tick people off.
