Resume Help – Consulting Company vs Client

So I’m an employee of BillyBobConsuting and I’m working at GreatBigCompany.

How do I put that on my resume? Do I put:

Or do I put

I would go with the first example, the one that indicates that your employer is BillyBobCompany, because that is actually who you work for. Where you’re assigned by BBC is secondary.

I list mine like so:

GreatBigCompany (contract through BillyBobConsulting)
Date-Date

This is where BBC hired me specifically for GBC, and if GBC ends my contract, I’m out of a job. For all practical purposes, I work at the pleasure of GBC. So I like to highlight that.

I’m in the IT field, FWIW.

It isn’t always that simple. I technically work for a consulting company but the only reason I work for them is my client, a mega-corp, wants me and my consulting company has the contract to fill that position. They are the only client I have ever had through that consulting company and probably ever will. I have been with my client for 6 years so far and my contract is about to be renewed again. I operate like an independent manager and the majority of people I work with don’t even realize that I am technically the employee of a 3rd party rather than my client.

On my resume and Linkedin profile, I mention both but emphasize my client because everyone knows them, I work on-site full time just like their real employees and I don’t have much contact at all with my consulting company. I might view it differently if any of the circumstances were different but they aren’t.

There is no one right answer to this as long as you don’t deliberately misrepresent who your actual employer was if it becomes important. Resumes are just marketing documents and you can frame things any way you want to illustrate your relevant skills and experience within reason.

I also use something like Bayard.

I work in IT as well and see that convention a lot for people that have long-term clients.

I’m also IT and this is pretty much my situation as well.
Thanks all!
