Retaliatory tariffs

Not really. USAID buys a bunch of US crops. Guess what USAID is not buying now? Also, the assholes known as DOGE has frozen USDA farmer welfare programs. See the leopards eating peoples faces thread for more.

Perhaps we know different people. The ones I have known, some of them (distant) relatives, are much more concerned with relative status, than absolute numbers. Granted some of them were too stupid to know the difference, but some weren’t.

The LCBO site is back up, with a cute new image reading “The EH list – Made in Canada” and an advisory that no US products are being sold.

My consumption of rum – formerly Bacardi Gold – was a major part of the income of the LCBO and the Ontario economy! :grinning: But I’m fine with switching to domestic rum or, better still, to genuine Havana Club Cuban rum – a double fuck-you to Americans since they don’t want you to buy Cuban products. It’s really beautifully smooth rum – a little expensive, but I don’t care.

That actually made our local news tonight. LCBO employees removing American wines and spirits from the shelves, and packing them into their boxes.

Mind, when I say “local news,” I really do mean local news. The LCBO story was among such local things as a traffic accident that closed Scenic Drive for a few hours, a traffic stop that turned into a big drug bust, and a local athlete who is going to the Special Olympics World Winter Games next week. For the LCBO story to be sandwiched in among those really local stories, means that it must be big news.

If i may take a small trip off-topic. I see someone used the word “natch” earliler in this thread, and ive seen it in several threads over the years. If someone would please just give me a short explanation of what “natch” means id be grateful. It shouldnt turn into a big off-topic, if someone just use a sentence to enlighten me. Im from Norway and have a general understanding of US slang, but this one eludes me. Sorry for the off-topic and i hope it doesnt go too far. Mods can punish me if they want, sorry.

It’s an abbreviation for « Naturally », used as a casual affirmative.

Usually with a satirical overtone.

I’ve been saying this too. I really think Trump looks at Russia’s oligopoly and thinks “I can do that!”

The really wealthy I know are obsessed with more, more, more, and they ALL voted Trump because of the taxes.

True enough, I’m just saying that they also find hurting those less well off to be a good thing too.

The have no concept of “ENOUGH”.

I apologize for using the term, which like a lot of slang may or may not be accessible to all. @Northern_Piper is correct, and @PatrickLondon has the correct nuance as satirical/sardonic as it’s used by most of the people I know, though even I was smart enough to acknowledge that often the sarcastic elements don’t always translate to the written page so I made sure to use a sarcasm tag.

Sorry for the confusion!

Natch

Thank you for being quick and to the point, not always easy for us outsiders to understand every slang. Imagine my years here figuring out POTUS, SCOTUS and FLOTUS hehe. I worked out in the end

But no, they didnt. Remember Joe Biden? Biden beat out trump in 2020 because trumps promises were not kept and his lies were unmasked.

Now sure, trump cant run again. But he will back candidates, and he gets pissed when those candidates lose.

Not holding my breath on that.

I remember pretty much every Midwestern state other than Minnesota and Illinois going even harder for Trump in 2020 than 2016, and then again in 2024. Just because Pennsylvania and Georgia changed their minds doesn’t mean farmers got any more informed.

Tariffs on! Tariffs off! Tariffs on! Tariffs off!
It’s like watching a terrible game of tennis.

Some US companies might INCREASE their manufacturing outside the US due to the tariffs.

Not sure why the MSN link is getting mangled. I added a space so you can copy & paste.

Tariffs are applied every time an object moves across a border. With the trade war in full swing, they’re applied by both countries, so it’s even worse.

Lots of people have made the point that auto parts cross the border many times during the process of manufacturing an actual vehicle. I could see someone doing the math, and realizing that keeping everything out of the US until the very end would save a lot of money. Ship between Canada and Mexico, and only ship finished cars to the US, where they get tariffed once.

The most profitable cars still only make about 20% profit for the manufacturers. So the costs of parts is ultimately about 80%, so for a car that costs 50k, parts are about 40K.

Every time a part gets tariffed, the cost goes up. Trump is saying 25%, so multiply by 1.25 every time a part crosses the border. With multiple crossings, the cost is Cost x (1.25)^N, where N is the number of crossings. If N is just 5, that more than triples the cost of parts, your 40k in parts costs 122k. Compared to a one-time tariff on a 50k car, which ends up costing 62.5k.

Kind of a no-brainer. Until you can source virtually all your parts from US sources, keep out of the US entirely until the very end.

Yep. How many manufacturers are sourcing everything within the US and selling within the US? Not many. Business analysts will find that Mexico, and others, are the best countries to manufacture in lickety-split. Manufacturing and sourcing is global now. Tariffs fucks everyone. Trump is such a dumbshit.
