Retaliatory tariffs

White House says tariffs are actually starting tomorrow

No one including the media can keep up with this clown show.

So be it - let the orange turd bring it on. In this time of threatened crisis it has been encouraging to hear how most Canadian’s are coming together in solidarity against this arbitrary and unreasonable economic attack.

Donald Trump today:

If this is the disruption, Trump’s approval polling honeymoon will be short:

So far, it sounds like the only carve-out will be for oil.

The idea seems to be to use a couple points of tariff-related inflation as a semi-hidden tax allowing an income tax reduction. Sometimes bad ideas like that work for a while. .

I shored up my strategic reserve of maple syrup a few weeks ago.

Re last post, I should pop into Aldi tomorrow.

Or are shelves already bare?

I wonder if there will be backups entering the U.S. from Canada this weekend. TV needs to be there.

There’s an opportunity.
Put the price of Canadian/Mexican oil up by 25%.
Even 45/47 will understand the impact of that.

And loudly complain that it’s “Trump’s Tariff Taxes” that are driving up the price of oil. At some point we might as well start Defensive Lying.

Even if the tariffs are delayed it’ll harm the economy.

Businesses need to know what the rules are. If I’m planning major work and purchases how can I move ahead not knowing what things will COST? How can my cross border customers buy my things without knowing what the US or Canadian governments will charge me?

I have a client in Brampton that makes stainless steel pressure vessels. If an American customer wants a $800,000 fabrication, they don’t currently know if it’ll cost $800,000 or $1,000,000. My client doesn’t know if some of the components will cost X or X*whothefuckknows. (They get their basic alloy steel from Canada, but some machined parts do come from the USA.) These businesses cannot effectively function when the US government is clowning around like this.

Why only 25%?

The elasticity of demand for oil is very, very low. Jack it up higher. Don’t cut it off; just squeeze them. The government needs the money.

I guess for the harmonics. But it’s your oil, sell it for what you can get.

Call it a “white carbon tax”. Levy it on all outbound consignments. Rebate it for counties who Canada considers has an adequately functioning climate change strategy.

Use the balance to support business and infrastructure adversely impacted by the US tariffs. Cock the snoot.

Just be a bit mindful of US foreign policy settings for past few decades.
If country of interest has oil, send weapons of mass destruction;
If country of interest has weapons of mass destruction, send oil.”

Even the threat of tariffs harms both economies. I hope our Canadian governments are even slightly prepared.

Press conference with the PM expected at 6pm EST.

CTV now says the speech will be at 8:30 pm Eastern.

I do not see details, but multiple press reports say variations on this:

Ottawa was warned that Trump’s tariffs could go higher if Canada does retaliate, a senior Canadian government source said.

Fuck it all - Canada should call Trump’s bluff and if the tariffs escalate so be it. Canada, there are 192 other countries you can do business with.

It’s not that easy. All those other countries are overseas. Trucking, rail and lake shipping are not available options.

The US is trying to crash our economy.

Premier Eby of BC has announced that he is directing Crown corps to buy Canadian as much as possible.

“Complete betrayal” of our long-standing relationship.

Says: fentenyl is a global problem; it requires cooperative effort; this is not the way to go.

It won’t be politically possible NOT to respond to what the WSJ calls “the most pointless trade war in American history”.

It’s a prelude to actual war. Make no mistake. Stock up on food and water.

PM is speaking.

Wants to speak to Americans our closest friends and neighbours

Tariffs against Canada will put American jobs at risk, cause food prices to go up, and damage imports that are essential for US national security.
