Saw a show that had some old footage of Disneyland the other day. I saw a few things I had forgotten about such as the pirate ship restaurant near Fantasyland. It got me thinking about the old rides that I miss. Yes, some of them were pretty corny but there are lots of memories. Some of them, in no particular order:
(and some of this goes pretty far back)
The mine train
The journey through inner space
Carousel of Progress
America the Beautiful
Well we still have “Carousel of Progress” here at DisneyWorld - it’s seasonal opening only, but it’s still here.
We lost:
“Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride” (MK)
“20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” (MK)
“Dreamscape” (MK)
“Skyride” (MK)
“Tom Sawyer’s Island”(MK)
“Huck Finn Rafts” (MK)
“The Canoe Ride Where You and 19 Other People Sweated and Paddled Over to Tom Sawyer’s Island” (MK)
“Horizons” (Epcot)
“World of Transportation” (Epcot)
“Michael Jackson’s 3-D Spectacular Movie Something” (Epcot)
and the “Electric Light Parade” at the Magic Kingdom.
Major make-overs:
“Snow White” (MK)
“Jungle Cruise” (MK)
“Tiki Bird Review” (‘Under NEW management’, my butt - it sucks!) (MK)
“Journey into Imagination” (Epcot) - Figment is back! (Epcot)
And “Hall of Presidents” changes every four or eight years.
After checking out that page, I think I’ll skip Disneyland any more. There are so many rides there I thought of with nostalgia, I wouldn’t want to know what happened to them!
Oh the days of riding the carousel over n over til my family had to pry me off of the thing … but for those attractions of days past:
Submarine Voyage
Adventure through Inner Space
People Mover was always good for a laugh since it was sooo cheesey
The Skyway buckets
Big Thunder Ranch … how can ya pass up Mickey’s Moo???
I loved the PeopleMover, although IIRC, it was one of the most dangerous of the rides. Teenagers who thought it would be really fun to change cars whilst in the tunnels would fall because there wasn’t a walkway (the track was just wide enough for the cars, and you couldn’t see that in the dark).
Does Mr. Lincoln still go on? It’s been a while since I’ve been out that way, so I’m not sure if he’s still around.
I don’t go to Mausland very often. It’s okay when you’re withsomeone, but it’s boring going alone. Anyway, the rides I miss have been mentioned:
Journey through Inner Space
Mission to Mars
Carousel of Progress
Submarine Voyage
People Mover (first kiss from my first g/f on that one)
The Pirate Ship that went on the river
Not a ride, but I miss “Skull Island”. It was by the pirate ship and was a big skull.
The gondola ride – Skytram? Whatever. Good way to get across the park when the goddamn parade is on.
Another thing I miss is the sense of “being there” on the Jungle Boat Cruise. It used to be that the ride operators were actors who tried to deliver a sense of actually being on a boat in Africa. Now they’re just a bunch of stand-up comedians. Disney’s lost its magic there.
I don’t miss the Rocket Rods. The line was way too long and the ride was way too slow.
Pirates of the Caribbean is in need of a major makeover. They pump too much fog into the room where the ship is battling the fort. The audio is poor and the gunshots are missing or unsynchronized. Without any pirate movies, it’s also lost its context. So we need a new, exiting Disney pirate movie. It’s about time for another iteration of Treasure Island.
Swiss Family Tree House has also lost its context. Last time I was there they’d renamed it to Tarzan’s Treehouse.
Are you kidding me? Tom Sawyer’s Island and the Electric Light Parade were some of the best things there. Now I’m not so sure I want to save up so much to bring the munchkins…
Do they still have the pirates of the carribean ride?
I just heard last night that they are making a “Pirates of the Carribean” movie.
Another pretty dumb ride that I loved as a kid was the Motor Boat Ride. They were on a track but as a little tyke, I really thought I was steering them. Ah, the innocence of youth.
In high season, they run ‘SpectroMagic’ parade, and I think they still run the electric boat parade on the lagoon in front of the hotels at night.
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is a fun laser-target game.
Alien Encounter (which replaced Mission to Mars [forgot about that one]) can get pretty intense - watched a bunch of high school band kids completely freak and throw up during the ride.
The old WEDway People mover was renamed the "Tomorrowland Transpotation Authority - still goes through Space Mountain, and they added new dialogue - ex.: “Attention visitors from Alpha Centuri: please keep all forward-facing tentacles clear of the doors as they close.”
The Lion King show (human-sized Rafiki and stick-type puppets) is worth the wait. (That show replaced the old 3-D movie filmed in the 70s - can’t remember the name of it.)
Oh, and Discovery Island (the island mini-zoo near Wilderness Lodge) is permanently closed. No word yet on what it will become.
Yup, but again modified as at Disneyland. The women are still chased by the pirates, but they are carrying trays of food, as if that is the pirates’ goal of the pursuit.
And yup, still the half-hour backup in disembarking from “It’s A Small World” (or at least it seems that way, from sitting in the ‘white room’ with that song blasting through).
Haunted Mansion is still my all-time favorite - went through that with a Mag-lite one time (there was no one else on the ride with us - we checked). There is some pretty cool stuff - props and collectables) in the attic. Pretty neat using night-vision goggles in there, too.
So come on down - there’s always us Dopers in the area, too!
Oh man. I haven’t been to DL since maybe '81 or '82 and then only for an evening so I didn’t see everything. I’m sure a lot had changed since I was last there for a full day in the mid seventies. I suppose I can live with a PC Pirates of the Carribean if it’s isn’t too extreme. [NEANDERTHAL PIG MODE]Chasing a broad who’s carrying food isn’t sucn an extreme change. Rape and pillage is hungry work. …not that I’d know :D[/NPM] It was a lame ride by most standards but we all get our warm fuzzies in different ways.
This thread makes me want to go back to Disneyland
They have (or are soon) cancelling the Bear Country Jamboree. I miss the Motor boats, I loved that one.
FYI the autopia is still there, although it has been remodled. Also, you can see the Main Street Electrical Parade at the California Adventure. I was so happy to see it again I actually cried. Thank Og (am I using that correctly?) it was dark.
I am referencing Disney World, since some of our stuff here (like Michael Jackson’s “Captain EO”) was shipped out there. I believe Disneyland Paris got our Electrical Light Parade.
Yeah, I know y’all are talkin about the original park, but, it’s the same mouseschtuff after all…
