Well, since, as you pointed out earlier, everyone will have a 1B playing and everyone will also have an SS playing, it evens out that way. If you want your Utility guy to be a 1B for fielding, rather than an OF for hitting (yes, I know 1Bs are usually pretty good hitters, too - I’m getting theoretical here), that’s your choice.
However, I do believe that Yahoo averages the percentages because it’s a lot easier on the software. I could be wrong about this, though.
Regarding fielding percentage: My point regarding 1B is that they get a chance for catching a throw from an infielder on a groundout. Errors on those types of chances are rare. 1B don’t have higher FPCG just because they get more chances, but because the extra chances they get are of a unique nature.
Regarding the batting slots, totally your call rackensack. I like deeper drafting myself, but I see your point of view.
And OPS isn’t some trendy B-level stat that’s come into focus because of Bonds’ staggering performance. Of the basic stats, it’s the one most preferred by sabermetricians, and the one that most accurately predicts success.
I know it looks like the stats will update throughout the day, as they did last year. But I’m telling you, they changed it this year for football so that it doesn’t update live. I’ll write them and find out what they have to say about it.
I can attest to what WL is saying about the football stats not being live time this year in Yahoo free leagues. What I can’t remember for the life of me is if the basketball and hockey stats are that way this year as well. I think it changed on those too - I seem to remember that those leagues used to say Live! in red next to the Today choice for stats display. That’s not there anymore.
Well, I can check tonight…
I’d be willing to play, rackensack. I was in one of the SDMB leagues last year, finishing a dissapointing 5th after having my ego stroked by three or four different players who said I was the team to beat coming out of the draft. I think it’s your call on the categories, though I’ve personally never liked using fielding stats myself.
I’ll drop you an e-mail when I get a chance to check my schedule. Did you mention whether you were planning on having a rotisserie or head-to-head format?
Just for the sake of my sanity, so that I only have one set of things to deal with, drop me an email at rackensackscott@netscape.net. That way, when I e-mail everyone who’s expressed an interest, you’ll be in the loop.
You can always autodraft, even during a live draft. Several people in my league did it last year - one of 'em actually wound up with pretty good players.
Right. Yahoo allows you to pre-rank the players available, or you can simply use Yahoo’s default rankings. The computer will select the highest-ranked player still available when your turn in the draft comes around, assuming that all of your possible position slots for that player haven’t been filled.
If there’s no further debate on the format, I’m inclined to open up the floodgates and let everyone who’s interested sign up. Right now, we’re looking at a draft date/time of Monday, March 10 at 10:10 PM EST (9:10 CST, 8:10 MST, 7:10 PST). If you can’t make that time, and can’t deal with making your selections via autopick, think twice about joining this league; I’d still consider changing the time if there were enough clamor, but that time appears to work for everyone who’s expressed an interest so far.
rackensack, if you don’t mind waiting one more day to open registration up to the TM, I’d appreciate it. I’m still trying to get in touch with some people from past SDMB leagues.
Thanks.
I’m in, btw. WL’s Blue Sox (sans apostrophe, unfortunately).
I didn’t realize you were making the last offensive slot an IF one. I like that better than UTIL.
I still think we should explore other options, though. It may sound small now, but you’re all going to hate that your stats won’t update throughout the day.
Omni, I’ll forward you the invite email. I’ve been meaning to mention this to you.
