return to the challenger deep

man has been to the moon several times. man has been to both poles and the highest mountains on many occasions. why then have we only visited the ‘challenger deep’ once, forty years ago? why isn’t this a standard goal for the extreme oceanographic set? there’s only one sub and two names associated with manned descents to this deepest of known places on earth, and from what i understand, they didn’t stay long enough to let the dust settle and have a good look around. what gives - no guided tours?

No real answer for you, but for more info about the descent of the Trieste in 1960, see Underwater Magazine.

that answer was real enough for me - the link specifically addressed my question. i figured it would be some financial concern, but still you’d think that in 40 years, someone would’ve shelled out for the guaranteed fame such an expedition would bring.
