Reversing engines...

In the thread " Do pistons stop in an engine when reversing direction?" someone mentioned that when reversing an automobile, the engine’s crankshaft still turns the same direction (true). However, I recall reading that the Messerschmitt microcar ran its 2-stroke motor backwards when backing up. You actually had to stop the motor, then restart it backwards (the model with this feature had an electric starter that worked either way, depending on how the switch was actuated).

Have any other cars used this unusual system for reversing?
