Revisiting Gitmo (Cuba, detention) -- Nice Place

I passed this around the office this morning. All agreed there was plenty in it to support whatever opinion you already hold.

Leads me to believe it is an accurate article.

How can reactions in your office provoke such a trust in a media report?

Beagle, let’s take a look at a few other details you support and applaud.

Abducting a little child from his parents, abducting him from his land, transporting him blindfolded (and probably in chains) across the globe, preventing him from even writing his family for 5 months (and I bet on it that if the Red Cross wouldn’t have been there this would have taken even much longer) interrogating him like if a child knows what adults do or can know about ‘Taliban” and “Al Qaeda” and can “support them"… Is something to applaud and be proud of?

Well I’m sorry, but this stupidity of yours, this blind support for your criminal government, makes me almost wish that the same would happen to your child… And thus to you. I would very much like to see you running across your country in search for your abducted child. I would like to see you build up debts for this cause, debts you can never pay back and who thus make your life miserable for the rest of your days.
Yet since I am very well aware of it that your children can’t help it that you are whom you are, I can hardly hold them responsible and make them pay for your arrogance.
However, I wouldn’t count on it that the family of these children reason the same.
Anyone ever heard the silly question: “Why do people hate the USA”?

Oh great. The US’ers are such nice people. They abducted these children from their family, their land and culture, where however so nice to offer them as immense proof of their compassion and good will a little piece of the Glorious Western Cake, made them very much aware of the recipes to bake it… And then dropped them back into the Middle Ages, where they were not rich and maybe couldn’t distinct planets and starts yet were educated in living their own culture and its values ** = They were brought up and educated to survive where they need to survive because that is where they live and shall live because there is no other way for them**.

Bye kids… Don’t be sad that where you live there are no facilities to bake Our Glorious Western Cake. Don’t bother that the elderly of your tribe and your father, who you should consider as the Wise Men in your life, can’t count anymore on your trust in them because they first of all never received a piece of that Western Cake but, more important, can’t bake it for you. While we made you like it, while we make you covet it, while we are responsible for it that you feel sick because you can’t get it anymore.
Don’t be sad, and most of all: don’t become bitter when you grow up. Please don’t join the terrorist organisation we tried to demolish by abducting you.

Really great.
Anyone ever heard the question: “Why do they become terrorists?”
Well, once again I must thank the USA for trying so very hard to keep them coming.

Hey Beagle the people in that story were children - one was 12 years old. The US is gonna make sure it treats the 12 year olds VERY well. In fact they know nothing about the adult inmates :

Quote " The boys never spoke to Guantanamo’s other prisoners - lots of Arabs and Afghans," according Naqibullah"

Lets wait and see what the adults ( umm… the ones who may actually know something ) get treated. I doubt THEY will come out saying" great place…".
By the way what was the other quote :

"Donald Rumsfeld, had described Guantanamo’s inmates as “hard-core, well-trained terrorists” and “among the most dangerous, best-trained, vicious killers on the face of the Earth.”

That’ll include the children they just released then…

No appolgies today. Sorry.

All quotes from op link.

12 year old boys? No contact with their families?

Now that’s an interesting idea, keithnmick!

btw, I’m sure you know your name is really keefnmick, don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone.

George Dubya Bush; Abusing others’ human rights so that yours are safe.

Just make sure you don’t inadvertantly fall one day into the wrong side of the others/yours divide. That’s a mobile boundary, you know.

Erm, well ok, but you know where the google is

Somehow i don’t think trying to kill yourself is a way of expressing your liking of the place.

Just plain ridiculous. And we wonder why people join extremist/terrorist organizations.

Wouldn’t you be mighty pissed at, say, Chile, if it kidnapped your child for months without telling you, didn’t allow him to have any contact with you and brainwashed him before sending him back to you?

Mad enough to retaliate, perhaps?

We aren’t going to win the war on terror in this shameful way, and I fear for the kind of terrorists we are breeding now. Now its not a radical pocket of people, now its just average kids cycling down a city.

L_C, why do you hate America?

Besides, this article is obviously filled with falsehoods. Everyone knows non-Christians don’t cry. Especially the brown ones.

Obviously a fabrication.

Allah… This just makes me cry…
Oh no… That must then be my White Half… And only my left eye fills with salty water.
Oh God… How obvious this is. Left side → bad/satan side in the Bible → Christianity = West → West = Great Satan → It suddenly all makes sense.

My Arab half is so happy now.

pssst!, Aledebaran, turn your sarcasm-meter on.

That was turned on. Even since a former post I made here.

Ahhh… :o

Five of the British kidnapees are released this week.

Let’s see what British young men have to say about Gitmo when they are free to talk.

Maybe they will be full of praise.

how

The five British Kidnapees have been released in the UK without charge after being held (four of them for two days) and questioned as window-dressing to appease Bush.

Now we have five educated western young men who will give their views of Gitmo.

First quote:

“In a brief statement late on Tuesday night, the first public comment from a Briton detained in Cuba, he reiterated his innocence, called the US to account for his “cruel, inhumane and degrading” treatment, and accused the UK of complicity in his questioning at the detention camp.”

More to come I am sure.

I was amazed we released them quite so quickly. IIRC, under the prevention of terrorism act, we could have held them for up to two weeks without charge (thats weeks, not years). I imagine there was pressure from Blair to keep them locked up, but the police must’ve decided there was soooooo little evidence to hold them that they couldn’t justify it for longer than 48 hours.

Also, its quite shocking to read reports of how some of these guys can hardly walk now (link to BBC article).

This is an absolute disgrace. Do you think we could have the rest of our citizens back that you’re holding hostage? Do we have to send Terry Waite in so you can chain him to a radiator?

Well, personally I’m wondering if the OP is going to ever come back and defend his premise. 'Cos it’s not, like, looking too solid at the moment.

(Excuse my long delay in replying to your question.)

What I meant is that the story was not a one-sided propaganda piece. It seems to me to have more validity than would an article that calls the facility a little death camp, or one that calls it a holiday in the sun.

The article seems balanced.
